FOCUS ON STAPLEFORD January 2013 http://www.broxtoweliberaldemocrats.org.uk New Year Edition 1 A very Happy New Yearfrom your local Liberal Democrat Councillors. We wish you all you wish for yourselves in the coming year. This Edition of FOCUS ON STAPLEFORD is for all residents of Stapleford and is delivered with an invitation to let us know any positive ideas you may have for your local area and also to give you the opportunity to flag up any issues or concerns. If you wish to respond you can do so via an email to one of your local councillors, by letter or telephone. Full contact details for all your local Lib Dem councillors are provided overleaf. You may know that the current government is very positive about the idea of localism – giving local residents a say in what happens locally. Here in Stapleford we feel that your local Lib Dem councillors have always embraced the idea of localism and have always been in direct contact with local residents about local issues. We have done this through regular delivery of FOCUS which brings the opportunity to contact your Lib Dem councillors about anything, at any time. Holding regular meetings of the Community Action Teams has provided further opportunity for comment and feedback, as does the Stapleford Town Council, with it’s opportunities for members of the public to address the Town Council. 17 Bus service to be replaced The Number 17 Bus service has been withdrawn by Premiere and many people have contacted us with concerns about this. The service is being replaced (in part at least) by a new service funded by the County Council and named the 110 Toton Connect Plus. This service will operate hourly, leaving Attenborough at 6.45am and arriving in Stapleford at 7.13am, returning to Attenborough from Stapleford, Walter Parker Square at 7.18am. The last bus leaves Stapleford at 18.18pm. Please let us know what you think about this service. Potholes and street lights Walking or driving around illustrates the effects of the recent bad weather on our roads. There are many potholes appearing and other problems as well. There are also a number of street lights that are not working. It is simple to report a fault – follow the instructions on the Nottinghamshire CC website – full address below, or let one of us know and we will do it for you – we do need a postcode to identify the exact location. Here are some recent news items that you may find of interest: Town Centre Improvement Awards The Beeston BID team had been awarded £10,000 by the government to improve Beeston. Broxtowe Borough Council has also been awarded £10,000 to improve Stapleford, Eastwood and Kimberley. This follows submission of videos for a Mary Portas Award. We are delighted to receive this funding and both Town and Borough councillors will be working alongside the newly formed Town Team in Stapleford. Holocaust Memorial Day 2013 The annual event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day in Broxtowe Borough will take place with a small ceremony in the Walled Garden at Bramcote Hills Park on Monday 28 January at 11.00am. Anyone can attend. Hot drinks will be available following the short service. Award for the Parks Team Broxtowe Borough Council has been recognised for the quality of its parks and open spaces, after picking up the Most Improved Performer Award for Parks, Open Space and Horticultural Services at the Association of Public Services Excellence (APSE) Performance Network Awards. The award judges praised the Council for maintaining high service standards and increasing the total area of land maintained, despite reduced budgets. They also commended the Council’s high customer satisfaction rate, reduced sickness levels, the play value of play areas and the number of local nature reserves for the size of the borough. Of course, we have several parks and open spaces here in our area, including Ilkeston Road recreation ground; Hickings Lane recreation ground and Queen Elizabeth Park. Paint Recycling It will not be long before paint can be recycled at the Beeston Household Waste Recycling Centre. Beeston HWRC will become one of three in the county that accepts paint for recycling. The paint is made available to community groups engaged in redecoration programmes, groups such Framework and Mencap. We have been pressing for a local facility for paint recycling for some time and are delighted that this has now been agreed. M1 closures Works are about to take place on the M1 between J 25 and J 24. These will involve full road closures over-night. Local diversions will be in place. The works involve a large carriage-way re-surfacing scheme and bridge works and are programmed to commence on the night of 14th January and expected to be completed by 26th January.
