  7. Review Creation: God reveals His goodness through creation and His mercy in response to sin. Patriarchs: God reveals His response to the faithfulness of men (Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph). Exodus: God liberates Israel, and leads them to the Pro-misedLand and shapes them into a nation holy to Himself. Conquest:Joshua, relying on God’s presence and power, leads Israel to possess and settle the Promised Land. Judges: Every man does what is right in his own eyes, and Israel falls into a cycle of disobedience, judgment, oppres-sion and deliverance (the sin cycle).

  8. Review Kingdom: Israel asks for a king and God raises up a succes-sionof kings (Saul, David and Solomon) who rule over a united Israel. Divided: Israel divides into the northern and southern kingdoms and each descends into rebellion and idolatry, inciting God’s judgment. Captivity: A succession of wicked kings brings God’s judg-ment of captivity on Israel, then Judah. God moves to pre-serve a remnant of Judah for 70 years in Babylon. Return: After the 70 years, God moves in the hearts of pagan kings to authorize the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s temple and allow His people to return to their own land. Silent: After the Jews return, God is silent for 400 years. Israel builds religious schools that evolve to teach religious interpretations of God’s Law rather than the Law itself.

Church Era • Jesus foretold the creation of bodies of believers who would meet togeth-erregularly for worship, instruction, service, fellowship and mission. • These churches are built on the con-fessionthat Jesus is the Christ. • The Church Era begins at Pentecost and continues today Jesus responded to Peter’s confession, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” by introducing His other sheep as the church, “And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)

  11. OVERVIEW The book of Acts is the historical record of the spread of the gospel message from Jerusalem to Judea to Samaria and to the ends of the earth. The first church is inaugurated by the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem. It experiences problems growing churches typical-ly experience today: the need for power, procla-mation and organization.

  12. The Holy Spirit comes to indwell individual believ-ers, transforming them into an empowered community who worship together, minister to one another, and take the gospel into the world.

  14. Discussion Why did God create the church and for what purpose? “that in all things He may have the preeminence” (Col 1:18) The ultimate purpose of the church is to bring Glory to God

Something Unexpected Was About to Happen Read Acts 1: 4-8 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power (Gk: dunamis) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:6-8) This was not what they expected!

Israel is God’s Redemptive Clock Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.   17. The Need of Power • Read Acts 1:9-14 • Jesus commands his disciples (120 men and women) to wait in Jerusalem for the Promise of the Father – the Holy Spirit • The disciples returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives (about a Sabbath Day’s journey) • They ”continued with one accord in prayer and supplication” • Along with the disciples was Mary, the mother of Jesus and her other sons, His brothers Jesus ascends into Heaven

  18. The results of Power Read Acts 2: 1-13 • The Day of Pentecost had fully come • They were all in one place in one accord • Suddenly a strong wind is heard (Gk: pones) which is often used to mean the “breath of God” and tongues of fire come in the same way to all who were there • Different real languages (Gk: dialekto) were spoken and understood by the crowd drawn to the sound of the rushing wind

  19. The Power of Proclamation • Then in Acts 2:14-39, Peter preaches to the group that has rushed to the loud sound • He attributes the disciples behavior to the prophecy of Joel 2 • He summarizes Jesus’ miracles, wonders, signs, death and resurrection • He says the resurrection is fulfillment of David’s prophecy (Ps 16) • He concludes with a call to “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” • They were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

  20. The Power of Proclamation Read Acts 2: 40-47 • Then “Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them” (v. 41) • They continued time in the Word, with one another and in prayer. (v.42) • The apostles do many signs and wonders (v. 43) • Generosity prevails to meet the needs of others (vv.44-45) • Spontaneous worship breaks out as they experience unity (vv. 46-47) • Others are added to their numbers DAILY (v. 47)

  21. The need For Proclamation Paul captures this need for proclamation: How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? (Rom 10:14-15) He links faith to hearing: … So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Rom 10:17)

Significance of The feast Days in Leviticus 23 What was the significance of the Feast of Passover? • Commemorates the day God delivered the Israelites from Egypt • The Passover Lamb is a picture of the Messiah’s sacrifice • The blood on the door post pictures the covering of sin (saved from Death) • Bread with no leaven – sinless sacrifice covers sin • This is the exact day Christ died on the cross What was the significance of the Feast of Firstfruits? • Occurs on the first day after the Sabbath that immediately follows Passover • Celebrates the coming harvest - sacrifice of choice Firstfruits • The first fruits foretell the bounty of the harvest to come • Prophetically pictures Christ as the “first fruits of them who slept” (1 Cor 15:20) • This is the exact day Christ rose from the grave

  26. The Need for Church Organization • Read Acts 6: 1-7 • Change was necessary due to growth and the needs of the body to fix problems • The church was in danger … • The 3 Ways the church is always attacked: - Fear of shame or persecution - Sin enters into the body - Bickering / Dissention breakout • The Holy Spirit led believers to a solution • The Greek noun Diakonos in Acts 6:1 (ministration) and the verb diakoneo in Acts 6:2 (serve) are later the basis for our title “deacon” • So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

  27. Application • What does this lesson teach us about God? Man? Sin? Redemption? • Proclamation without power is simply the transfer of information • Service without power is simply the transfer of goods • The Holy Spirit comes to birth people into the kingdom of God and to empower them to minister in such a way that the Word of God continues to spread • The church is a community of believers who recognize their need for the Holy Spirit’s power in both proclamation and organization
