NWRFC Migration • NWRFC Migration on Schedule for June • 2+ staff • Joe (forcings, IFD, stuff), Bruce (migration), Ray (OFS support and segment cleanup), Rick (migration training, scripts, support) • All 340 catchments migrated • +10 hydraulics segments not migrated • Migrated to standalone, QCd … • Uploaded to the MC/OC • Configuration on live system everything but MC_MAIN forecast group • Exception - Lower Columbia and other backwater reaches (hydraulics) • Bonners Ferry/Queens Bay reach • Coquille @Coquille • Umpqua @Reedsport • Lower Snohomish (development on hold) CAT meeting June 24-26, 2009
NWRFC RE-migration • New calibrations need to be re-migrated to FEWS as they become available • New migration scripts require CATs to re-migrate entire domain due new features • From OFS punch file to FEWS • Needed for employing precip weighting techniques within FEWS • Updating topology CAT meeting June 24-26, 2009
NWRFC Testing and Comparison Analysis • Condering 2 test methodologies • 1st - Validate configuration and local hydrology • We call this “Level-5” testing • Spot comparisons • Select representative catchments (or all) • Sync to a select state condition (high and low water events) • Duplicate MODS on both systems (NWSRFS and FEWS) • Considering MOD migration tool • Compare NWSRFS and FEWS time series • This test employs current OFS PP • Same forcings in both systems CAT meeting June 24-26, 2009
2nd – Parallel effort to generate grid forcings • Wean away from OFS PP from operations • Establish needed grid fields • Using NC2GRIB software (D.Miller) • GRID generation techniques Operational at NWRFC • GRID conversion – NetCDF to Grib1 • Grids sent to CHPS • Submit to NPVU CAT meeting June 24-26, 2009
NWRFC Grid Status Observed Grids • Precipitation – currently MM (MPE?) • Temperature – RTMA (running hourly) • MPE considerations for temp QC • Ta 1-hr, Tx24, Tn24 • No Freeze yet Forecast Grids • Precipitation – GFE 10-days 6- and 1-hr time steps • Temperature – GFE 10-days Tx, Tn, 1-hr Ta • Freezing Levels - GFE 10-days, 6hr time step CAT meeting June 24-26, 2009
Forcing Analysis • Compare OFS and FEWS Forcings • Successful at ingesting grids into FEWS (operational) • Determine short/long term biases • Relationship to calibration • AOR implications • Use FEWS as tool to display time series of mean areals from NWSRFS and FEWS (comparison) • MAP • FEWS compute MAP by grids & absolute (point data) station weights • Station weighting applies to both observed and forecast • MAT remains an unknown • Algorithms to be determined • Analysis yet to be performed • 3-equations to compute MAT (observed, forecast, and calibration) • Relationship of the short term event and long energy budget within the snow pack CAT meeting June 24-26, 2009
