  3. United States in 1783 • Created by America winning the Revolutionary War • Treaty of Paris of 1783 with Britain • Slavery was allowed by the Constitution • Individual states outlaw slavery throughout the years

  5. Northwest Territory • Land given to the United States during the Treaty of Paris • Northwest Ordinance of 1787 • Made statehood possible for Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin • Prohibited Slavery • Established public schools

  7. Southern Territories • Slavery was allowed • Pickney’s Treaty with Spain gave America the southern parts of Mississippi and Alabama

Texas Annexation • In 1821 the first Americans entered Texas • Agreed to become Mexican Citizens, Catholic and to not own slaves • They didn’t keep their word • Mexican President Santa Anna tried to force Texans to stick to their word. • War breaks out between Texas and Mexico • Texas won the war and declared independence in 1836 • 1845 The USA makes Texas the 28th state
