Saint Helens erupts, killing 60 people. • Sadam Hussein launches war against Iran for close to a decade over oil rights. • US hockey team beat Russia for the gold in the Winter Olympics.

Special Events 1986 • January 28, the Challenger explodes. • Iran Contra Scandal (Who can forget Ollie North?) is reported in November in a Lebanese magazine. • Vice President George Bush's broccoli incident, tons of the stuff is delivered to the White House. • Return of Haley's Comet • Hands Across America, May 25, 1986 • Statue of Liberty celebrates the 100th Anniversary and gets a face lift in the process. • "A.M. Chicago" changes its name to the "Oprah Winfrey Show" and goes national September 8th. • Not only did the Red Sox go to the World Series (They lost in 7 to the Mets) ,the Boston Celtics won the 1986 NBA Championship, and New England went to the Super Bowl but lost to the Chicago Bears 46-10.
Special Events 1987 • Star Wars' Chewbacca was caught with cocaine. • "Baby Jessica," Jessica McClure falls down the well and is later rescued. Wednesday October 14th, 1987 --9:30am cst through Friday October 16th, 1987--8:30pm cst • Battle for "Baby M" begins. William and Elizabeth Stern of New Jersey hired Mary Beth Whitehead to carry a baby to term for them. After it was all over, surrogate contracts were declared illegal and the Sterns won the right to bring "Baby M" up and allow Mrs. Whitehead visitation rights. • German lands airplane on Red Square, Moscow • Condom commercials begin to appear on TV for the first time. • Jessica Hahn is implicated in the Jimmy Bakker scandal • The marriage of Charles and Diana starts to deteriorate, they begin living alone. • Les Miserables is awarded 8 Tony awards, including Best Musical.
Special Events1988 • CDs outsell vinyl for the first time ever. • Jimmy Swaggart admits to being with prostitutes. • Pan Am Flight 103 explodes over Lockerbie, Scotland; Lybian terrorists are suspected of planting the bomb • Bobby McFerrin tells everyone "Don't worry, be happy" • Sonny Bono becomes Mayor in Palm Springs. • Dukakis loses to the "Read My Lips" guy, he's never heard from again.
Special Events1989 • The fall of the Berlin wall on November 9th. • Students protest on Tienanmen Square, Beijing, China - the army intervenes; 3000-7000 killed, June 3rd. • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles become an over night sensation • Rob Lowe is spotted in a soft porn video with an underage girl. • Milli Vanilli gets Best New Artist Grammy which is later stripped when it's learned they were lip synching for another (much uglier) duo. • Pete Rose is banned from baseball for betting on games, August 24. • Vietnam withdraws from Cambodia, September 26, after almost 11 years of occupation.

September 11, 2001. A day that will forever be remembered.Let it not be remembered for the evil acts of violence targeted at fear, panic and death. But remember the human spirit, the brotherhood of mankind, and the goodness that not only New Yorkers but Americans and the world over have dedicated to saving our most precious resource: life. For this is the only way to stand up to those wish to fight from shadows, or are rabid enough to believe it is worth their own life to see so many others end.May God bless our Ground Heroes.
