Terms • Soviet Union- Enemy of the U.S. since 1946 after WWII because they were Communist. • Soviet Afghanistan War- last from 1979-1988 and helps to bring the fall of the Soviet Union. • Al Qaeda- set up by Osama Bin Laden it is a terrorist network founded in the late 80s. • Taliban- government of Afghanistan lead by radical Muslims that housed Al Qaeda operatives from 1996-2004. • Mujahedeen- Muslim guerrilla warriors engaged in a jihad.

Terms • Iran Hostage Crisis- 1979-1981 it will last for 444 days where the new radical government of Iran takes 52 U.S. diplomats hostage. • Iran Iraq War- lasts from 1980-1988 with neither side winning the war and the US supports Iraq and Saddam. • Persian Gulf War- 1990-1991 Saddam invades Kuwait and threatens Saudi Arabian homeland security and the vast oil fields there.
