MVPsStudent Expectations for Various Class Activities • M: Movement: acceptable physical movement. • What is the body doing? • V: Verbal Behavior: expected and acceptable voice level. • What should it sound like (voices off/silent, quiet, conversational, screaming/chaos)? • P: Participation: the doing/action. • What are you being asked to do?
Speaker Time (teacher instruction, student, guest speaker) • M: No physical movement around room. Body language that conveys a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T: eyes on speaker, sitting up straight, pencils down unless taking class notes. Raise hand and wait to be called on. • V: Voices off/silent until called upon by teacher. No calling out during instruction. • P: Actively listen: take notes, raise hand to chime in on discussion.
Independent Time(individual work) • M: Seated unless getting up to go to bathroom. Raise hand silently for help from teacher. • V: Voices off/silent unless asking for help from teacher. • P: Complete the assignment. Remain focused and “in the zone.” Follow directions carefully. Read if finished early.
Collaboration Time(pair work, small group work) • M: Move into assigned groups/pairs when directed—no earlier! Push desks together if directed. Sitting or standing will depend on particular activity. • V: Inside voices during activity unless teacher says otherwise is OK and only to fellow group members (not other groups!) • P: Focus on task at hand and complete it. Ensure equal participation of all members. Respect each other’s opinions and truly listen to one another
Bathroom Usage • M: Get out of your seat and grab the girl or boy pass, put it on your desk before walking down the hall to the bathroom. • V: Be silent as you grab the bathroom pass. Be quiet as you walk through the halls. Classes are in session! Rejoin class quietly and without disruption. • P: Going to the bathroom, but NOT during Speaker Time.
Turning in Classwork • M:Get out of seat and line up in reverse alphabetical order by last name. • V: Quietly line up—I know this may take some getting used to and you may have to talk to figure out your correct spot in line! • P:Put work in proper tray face-up.
Entering Class/Opening Routine • M: Move around classroom to gather materials. Put up coats, etc. Sit in desk once you are ready. • V: Enter the room quietly. Voices turned off/silent for attendance. • P: Gather proper materials necessary for class.
Assessment Time (quizzes, tests) • M: Raise your hand for help OR if you need to go to the bathroom AND when you are done. Otherwise, your bottom stays in the seat the entire time! Eyes do not move past your own paper. • V: Be silent the entire testing period unless you are asking the teacher a question quietly. • P: Remain focused on assessment and giving best effort for the entire testing period. If finished early, engage in independent reading.
