  4. Winning without Conflict • Philosophy has several aspects: • Understanding strategic positions, • Collecting competitive information & recognizing opportunities, • Automatically selecting moves that minimize losses and avoid dangerous situations, • Instantly recognizing the specifics of situations and the responses they require, • Getting the most out of each move and securing advantages

  5. Clausewitz’s analysis Clauswitz- “On War”

  6. The Paradoxical Trinity • A simple model: Figure out how the three dominant tendencies (passion, genius, and reason) of one belligerent will interact with that of the other belligerent • To figure this out one must calculate how the people, the military, and the government interact in the enemy’s state and in one’s own

  7. The Paradoxical Trinity • The paradoxical trinity evolves from Newtonian methodology • Clausewitz says every war is characterized by three dominant tendencies: • Primordial violence, hatred, and enmity, which are to be regarded as a blind natural force • The play of chance and probability within which the creative spirit is free to roam • Its element of subordination, as an instrument of policy, which makes it subject to reason

  8. The Paradoxical Trinity • Clausewitz “Paradoxical Trinity” makes the case for war as an art. • It describes the “fog of war” components • In reality Sun Tzu validates war as an art with his breakdowns of how to conduct war amid its variables • As an art, principles of war are still taught and sought out • The United States Army shares a common military theories as Europeans
