  2. Definition: Antebellum South • Pre-Civil War culture, especially in the southern states • The era in the history of the United States after the American Revolution (Declaration of Independence) before the Civil War

  3. Before the beginning of slavery • Africa: • played an important role in world affairs • there were many different cultures • America: • European explorers expected gold in America  workers were needed  slavery

  4. The beginning of slavery • 1619: first slaves were imported • ~1600-1650: strict rules about slavery • over the time, racial slavery came up  “blackness became the primary mark of slavery”

  5. Slavery • slaves were the property of their masters • had to adapt to the American culture • fought for their freedom, petitions for their right to be free • Slavery was the basis for the wealth of the South which was rather agrarian than industrial

  6. Invention of the cotton gin • Eli Whitney invented a machine • faster than to do it by hand • fewer slaves were needed • cotton could be processed more quickly

  7. End of the slave trade • gradual abolition of slavery between the 1780s and the 1810s • 1820: End of the slave trade

  8. Missouri Compromise • 1820 • Agreement between the pro-slavery and the anti-slavery factions

  9. Amistad incident • La Amistad: a ship • 1839: 53 African slaves, illegal imported to America • rebellion on the ship to conquer the ship and return to Africa
