  3. Third Declension Neuter Nouns • We’ve already learned the chart for 3rd declension masculine/feminine nouns: • ---- -es • -is -um • -i -ibus • -em -es • -e -ibus

  4. Third Declension Neuter Nouns • Neuter Law: • The nominative and accusative cases are always identical, and in the plural the nominative and accusative cases always end in –a. • Let’s apply this rule to our 3rd declension chart and see what happens…

  8. Third Declension I-Stem Nouns • A group of third declension nouns called i-stems have –ium instead of –um in the genitive plural. • The neuter i-stems also have –i instead of –e in the ablative singular, and –ia instead of –a in their nominative/accusative plurals. • Let’s take a look….

How to identify an i-stem noun • There is a long list of rules that will teach you how to i.d. which 3rd declension nouns are i-stems. • If you’d like to read it, see p. 321…otherwise, just look for the nouns marked with an asterisk (*) in your book’s vocabulary lists!  • * Nouns are i-stems. Thank you, book!!! • Also, the parts are listed nom. sg., gen. sg., gen. pl., like hostis, hostis, hostium (f.) • N.B. (nota bene): I-stems are not marked in your glossary with an *, but are listed like “hostis” above.
