  2. To do… • Read F-54 • Copy the challenge question. • Copy the vocab Leap year: A year on the earth that has one extra day (February 29th). This happens once every 4 years. Solar: Related to the sun.

  3. Discuss with your partner: • How does the calendar we use relate to the motion of the Earth and Moon? • How long would a year last if each month was based only on the lunar cycle?

  4. Silently examine the pictures on F-55 for 90 seconds • What do you see in this picture?

  5. Read the following: • The calendar that the United States, and most of the most of the world, uses is an example of a SOLAR calendar. This means that the calendar is based on the movement of the earth around the sun. • This calendar, which dates back to the late 1500’s, keeps the year closely in step with the Earth’s solar year. • The length of each month is loosely based on the lunar cycle. • The term “loosely” is used because the lunar cycle is 29.5 days, but months range from 28 to 31 days. • Not all calendars are solar calendars. • Some calendars are LUNAR. This means they are based on the moon’s cycle. The Islamic calendar is lunar. • Some calendars are LUNISOLAR. This means they are based on both the solar and lunar cycles. The Jewish and Chinese calendars are lunisolar. • Different types of calendars also vary in how they determine the first day of the year and how they number the years. • In this activity you will look at the length of a year and the length of a month. All of the calendars in this activity are based on actual or proposed calendars.

  6. To do… • Read F-57, F-58, and F-59 (Procedure step #1) • With your table group: • Complete procedure step #2 to #4 • Make sure to answer analysis questions (#1 to #3) for all 3 places • EACH table will be called on to answer #3 for the class.

  7. Finish analysis #4 and #5 • #4b- just discuss / you do not need to write anything. • #5 answer on a half sheet of paper. • This will be scored using the Evidence and Trade-Offs rubric • Answer: student sheet 83.1 analysis 1 to 5 (#5 on separate paper) vocab challenge questions
