My Story • Roosevelt’s job is “Coaching Suicide”! • Why leave a rising program you helped build? • Too comfortable- I like challenges..I Guess • Stereo Stolen 3rd day of school. • Bunga Bunga or Death.
Double Wing- The Sell • I explained to the kids: • Simple/Easy to learn. • Caters to your talent. • Don’t need great athletes. • You have 4 downs. • Nobody can catch or throw! • DW fits my character on the field • Brash, Confident Not Arrogant, Frustrating, Simple.
Roosevelt-Present • 91% Title 1 and Free/Reduced lunch • 60% Single Parent or Guardian • 20% Foster Homes • 12% Nomads • 8% 2 Parents at home • $ and Student/Parent Education are issues • Multi-family households • 2850 Students enrolled • Deceiving numbers • Not reasons-reality!
2002 Woes- Before Double Wing • State record in P.A. over 650 points! • No Frosh Team • No Organized Weights • Ended with 15 JV and 21 Varsity respectively • 1-29 record in 3 years • Running Clock every game • Morgue On Campus! • Beaten down kids-looked down upon • 7 Goose eggs
2003 1st Year • 375 P.A. (10 Games) • 73 P.F. • Organized Lifting • 38 Jv/43 Varsity (1 to grades) • Won 2 games • No Running Clocks! • Still “ME” players when it counted. • 1 Player at Division 1 School (Fresno St.) • 1 Goose Egg
2004 2nd Year • New Logo • 378 P.A. (11 Games) • 149 P.F. • 41 Frosh/34 Jv/34 Var (1 Cancer/ 1 Grades) • 7 returners (4 starters) • One of the hardest pre-season schedules • Not by choice.. So, what?! • Better Attitude • Scored every game • 5 “woulda-coulda-shoulda’s” games
2005 3rd year • “Payback” Baby…… • Minimal discipline • No Cancers! • 16 Returners that can play • Good leadership and accountability • It’s in the eyes. • Hunger is there • 1 invite to the Nike-Stanford Combine • ??????????????
Double Wing Implementation into an Inner City School Key Components: • Fundraising • Community • Focus • Youth Program • Belief-Tradition • D.R.I.F.T. *timeline is a must*
Fundraising • Start Your Booster Club-started w/3. Now we are 25 strong. We had less than 2k altogether. • Have a vision of what you want to raise and present it-Florida 2006 • Gold Cards/Fireworks/Car wash/Pizza Cards/Donation Letters/K.O. Dinner/S.Mart • Schedule Big Events-think outside the box! (Camps too!) • All ideas are good ideas. • Kids can AFFORD IT! • Booster are in your control ultimately. • Cater to your Alumnus • Coaches take part to offset costs
Community • Support your Youth Programs and Invite them to be part of your staff and Games. • Churches-Haka/Luau • Be Visible at Elementary Schools w/ team Posters- Not “recruiting” just spreading the love. • Invite kids to walk your sidelines. • Volunteer at the “Y” • Include them in any media situation. • All Media is good media
Community- School • Constantly communicate with teachers that you are there for STUDENT-athletes. • Get to know your true bosses- Office Staff and support services. • Get a Website: $40 eteamz.com • Work with other sports as much as possible. The target is big enough on your back.- E-mails, open support, buy what they are selling-invite to fundraise. • Unfortunately, it’s You vs. everyone else still. • Union Dinosaurs- work’em one at a time. • Hug’em all everybody needs one and it breaks the walls. • Have a teacher of the week. • Donation Shirts at your beginning in-service of the year. • Get a midday PE Class! Attendance/ recovery/strength/auxiliary sports benefit. • Initially invite all to join.
Focus • What is your Principal’s focus for you? Find it and run with it. • Believe and display 100% in your programs off/def. Even though you and others may have doubts. • Interview all types of kids and ask how the program can be improved on- I was laughed at. • What are their concerns and how can they addressed. • Let the kids know that you are there for them and not the other way around. People have ditched them since they were kids. • Tell the kids it’s their program- bring in one quality kid. “We’re ___ away from being a good team” • You must work for them, so they see you mean business!
Youth Programs • Let them mirror you offensively. Have the vets demonstrate. • Invite staffs to clinics/ RHS • Focus on letting them know you are there to help them in any way. • Be visible and visit their campuses as much as possible. • Buddy Programs to P.W./8th • Free Youth Skills Camp • 8th with Frosh C • 5-7th with Jv C/P • 12yrs with Varsity C/P • Girls Invited!
Belief-Tradition • 100% in what you are doing. Remind yourself to stay focused! • Use word s like us/we/ours-ownership • Don’t ever talk about wins. Instead use success/honor • I work my tail off-all I ask for 100%/Performance • Constantly make a lesson on confidence on the field and the classroom. (Marco/Shield)) • Raise the bar-they will achieve. It’s epidemic. • “How Do You Want To Be Remembered” • You are the foundation for the future. • Changed logo/uni’s to reflect offense and attitude. Haka • Team Dinners • Goal Cards
Belief-Tradition Cont. • Are you still going to be my coach?? • It’s O.K. to fail. How else are you going to learn? Effort and resilience is what matters. • Football is a game for life. • Be your worst Critic. • Believe in them because they want to believe in you. (Stop smoking slowly-E) • Tell you kids you love them and hug them. • Appropriately- T.Blood • Hire good people X’s and O’s come. • Don’t Hire to Hire
Disciplining On Your Terms. Academics-Weight Lifting “Be A Role Model and Discipline Them Quickly- They actually WANT it”
Set Your Standards Day 1 • Never be late- show up 5-10 min. early • Address all coaches by “Yes/No”coach.(kid game) • Never miss a work out. • Drill them hard and swift to show you mean business. • Use can always lighten up. • Consistency is a must-follow up! • Up-downs and wall-sits are the poison. Contract and expulsion are the daggers.
Excuses- Sound Familiar??? • Kids used to dictate playing time and discipline. • I have to baby sit. • I didn’t bring my clothes • I forgot my combination • I have a doctor’s appointment(braces etc.) • I have a test or H/W to make up. • Quinsinera practice. • Uncle is in the hospital • I’m getting Burned Out. • Ran out of gas or car broke down. • The teacher kept me late. • I have Club soccer/BB/Basketball practice.
Suggestions • Always give an option to the punishment • After punishment, explain why. (275 u/d 6 min wall sits) or you will lose them. • Balance the negative with the positive, unless planned. • No clothes/combination? 60 min w/s • Have kids run the punishment. Walk away and say, “I trust you”. Pressure is on them. • Give your cell #, they must contact you no matter what. Not someone else. Teaches responsibility • Play twenty questions with every excuse. • Babysitting? Bring them and the girls will watch them. Let me call you Aunt…….
Academics • During Off-Season Grade checks start in Feb. Every two weeks it is due on Fri. • In season every week. • Teacher/student absences do not count. 25 u/d’s per class. • 3 hrs per week in study hall- mandatory check in. • Praise good grades and improvement. • Separate eligible/not eligible and borderlines during class. • Contracts for knuckleheads. Which carry over to next season. . (2 week and 4 week) • E-mail teachers!
Weight Lifting • All Olympic Lifts-SPEND $ • Champions are made in January, not August. • X-fer training into games- King of Da’ Ring/application is crucial. • 3-5 contact times per week for Varsity. • Get midday class. • Lifting is the vehicle for wellness and confidence. • Stress the importance of nutrition/safety daily. (soda) • Take all kids to Power Lifting Tournaments to plant the seed. • Call other high schools for old equipment. • Get kids out of their comfort zone!
Words of Wisdom • “A Man Without Balance Will Fall” • Learn from the Veteran’s. • Your Program will take a life of it’s own soon enough. • For me it was Advocare Supplements. That kept me balanced.
