  2. When do you use the present progressive? • The present progressive is used to tell what you are doing RIGHT NOW. It is the combination of is/am/are and ______ing. • She is eating. (right now) • We are running. (right now) • They are laughing. (right now) • I am walking. (right now) • You all are listening. (right now)

  3. Forming the present progressive • In order to form the present progressive you need 2 PARTS • The first part you need is the verb “Estar” • The conjugated verb “estar” Estoy Estamos Estás Estáis Está Están

  4. Forming the Participle • The second part that you need is called the Participle. • To form a regular participle you chop your ar/er/ir ending and add: -AR = -ando -ER/-IR = -iendo Examples: Comer – comiendo Hablar – hablando Vivir - viviendo

  5. Irregular Participles • Some participles are irrregular • -ER/-IR verbs whose stem ends in a vowel will have the ending “-yendo” • Examples: • Caer – cayendo • Leer – leyendo • Ir – yendo • Oír - oyendo

  6. Other Irregular Participles • Stem changers • Dormir – durmiendo (o-u) • Morir – muriendo (o-u) • Preferir – prefiriendo (e-i) • Sentir – sintiendo (e-i) • Decir – diciendo (e-i) • Pedir – pidiendo (e-i) • Servir – sirviendo (e-i)

  7. Practicamos • I am studying. • We are writing. • They are washing the plates. • You are practicing the piano. • She is cooking. • You are reading. • You all are going to the store. • We are working. • I am buying a present. • He is sleeping.

  8. Past Participle • The past participle is used to say what you “were doing” in the past. It is used in the same way the Imperfect tense is used. • She was sleeping. • I was cleaning. • They were listening.

  9. Past Progressive • To form the PAST progressive you do the EXACT same thing except you use the IMPERFECT form of the verb Estar. Estaba Estábamos Estabas Estabais Estaba Estaban Then add your participle (same as present)

  10. Practicamos • She was cleaning. • I was watching tv. • You were singing. • He was dying. • They were falling. • You all were talking. • They were drinking tea.
