Prof. Ivanka Yankova, Ph.D. The university libraries in Bulgaria today The public, social, economic and technological changes in Bulgaria after 1990 reflected essential on the functioning, the social role and the entire condition of the university libraries’ system. These changes reflect different in the work of the particular libraries and don’t allow their synchronous development.

Prof. Ivanka Yankova, Ph.D. Today the libraries in the universities in Bulgaria are with different stage of automation of library-information processes, with different stage of technological security, completeness and wealth of library’s funds and qualifications of the libraries’ staff.

Prof. Ivanka Yankova, Ph.D. Association of the University Libraries in Bulgaria – directions of work and new approaches of professional dialogue In 2000 was founded an Association of University Libraries in Bulgaria (AUL). The Association is a natural continuation of the joint work of the Council of Directors of University Libraries, formed in 1978 under the leadership of the University Library “St. Kliment Ohridski”. It also follows the goals of the Council for building a unitary university information system in Bulgaria.

Prof. Ivanka Yankova, Ph.D. • Executing its mission the Association of the University Libraries sets up for performance wide spectrum of assignments and activities: • AUL strengthens its position as main factor in the society that represents and protects the interests of its members in front of the university directions and the government authorities of national and regional level. • Popularizing among the government, social and economic structures the necessity for helping and facilitating the access of users to the new communication and information services.

Prof. Ivanka Yankova, Ph.D. • Giving to the government, social and economic structures and the university directions the necessary information for taking decisions in the field of library-informational insurance. • The realizing of contacts and interaction with related organizations in the country and abroad. • Encouraging and helping of different forms of uniting and co-operating between libraries in the universities in the country. • Development and organizing of programs for teaching, orientate to continuous qualification of the library-information specialists.

AUL lobbies for social protection and for raising the social status of the library-information specialists from the university libraries. • AUL gives assistance to the modernization of the libraries and entering the new information technologies in them. Stimulating of the scientific-research and applied activities in the area of the information insurance in the university libraries. • AUL works for attracting of new members in the association as well as for the creation of new partnership and contacts with external organizations and institutions.
