  1. National Days of Independence • Canada • July 1st, 1867 • South Korea • August 13th, 1948 • Mexico • September 16th, 1810

  2. Proverbs 14:34 • Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people. America Needs Righteousness, Not Religion.

  3. Righteous or Religious. But not Both. Mark 2:18-28

  4. Mark 2:18 • And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: • and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

  5. Fasting • In the OT the fast was regarded as an act of self-renunciation designed to mollify God’s wrath and move him to act in gracious disposition. In times of emergency, the people fasted to persuade God to spare them from impending calamity. Tyndale Bible Dictionary

  6. By the time Jesus arrived on the scene, the OT Law had been turned into a yoke of bondage.

  7. Listen to this sermon from Jesus. Matthew 23:1-12

  8. Fasting had become a religious exercise. Fasting was perceived to make someone righteous.

  9. Turn to Luke 18:9-13 Righteous or Religious

  10. Fasting • With the exception of ascetic groups such as the disciples of John the Baptist, the prevailing mood of fasting when Jesus appeared on the scene was one of mournful sadness, an obligatory necessity, a self-imposed requirement to produce the discipline of self-denial. • Tyndale Bible Dictionary

  11. Instructions About Fasting Matthew 6:16-19

  12. Mark 2:19 • And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? • as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

  13. Note • For Jews weddings were tremendous times of celebration and rejoicing; thus, the wedding illustration Christ used would have been understood by all.

  14. Question With Jesus at your house, why would you need to fast?

  15. Mark 2:20 • But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

  16. Between Christ’s Death and Resurrection the disciples of Christ would enter a legitimate time of grief, fasting, and mourning.

  17. Mark 2:21 Jesus Continues: • No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.

  18. Religious or Righteous? In religion, I do certain things that make me more righteous than the person who doesn’t do these things.

  19. Mark 2:22 • And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

  20. New Covenant • New Testament • New Cloth • New Wine • New Bottles Jesus is calling for a clean break from the “religion” created by the Rabbinic Tradition of the Intertestamental Period

  21. The context of v. 23-28 is critical to our understanding of the issue in v. 18-21.

  22. Look at the issue in these verses: Mark 2:23-28

  23. Mark 2:27-28 Religion or Righteousness? • And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: • Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

  24. Last Week When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

  25. Biblical Righteousness the NT presents this in 2 senses

  26. Made Righteous Romans 5:19 • For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, • so by the obedience [the work of Christ] of one shall many be made righteous.

  27. A Righteous Man or Woman James 5:16 • Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous manavaileth much.

  28. Conclusion • Having been made righteous because of the gospel of Jesus Christ—how ridiculous to think that I should depart from the gospel into religion to live out this righteousness. This is Paul’s point in Philippians 1:27

  29. Philippians 1:27a • Only let your conversation [conduct as a citizen of the kingdom of God] be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: Living the Gospel: Its Application into Everyday Life as Citizens of the City of God preached on 6/24/2011
