DCS status for December run

Detector Control System (DCS) plays a crucial role in ensuring equipment control and power supply configuration across various environments, focusing on archiving and archiving setup for detectors at CERN P2 during commissioning. Initiatives include PVSS control and FSM implementation. DCS infrastructure is provided, and detectors are encouraged to start archiving. Central DCS team supports infrastructure and initiates archiving for December run.

  1. DCS status for December run

  2. Detector DCS usage • All detectors use DCS in a multitude of environments • Outside labs, during construction and assembly • CERN during assembly and ‘surface’ tests • Testbeams • During installation and commissioning at P2 • Main emphasis on control of equipment • Control of power supplies • Configuration/control of FE electronics Alice Offline week

  4. Detector DCS archiving • Key issue for offline: archiving • and subsequent transfer to OCDB • Archiving had low priority for detectors • Except maybe for testbeams, then mainly archiving to local file archives • Otherwise punctual for ‘learning’ and debugging • Since early this year a major effort to push detectors to start archiving Alice Offline week

  5. Detector DCS at P2 • Detector DCS is essential for commissioning at P2 • But, again, concentrating on controls • Setup, tuning and use of archiving is part of the commissioning procedure of the detectors at point 2 • Therefore following the installation of detectors • Various detectors have started to archive at P2 • TPC, TOF, HMPID, MCH, TRG Alice Offline week

  7. Detector DCS at P2 • Major effort to have archiving operational for all detector elements installed and participating in the December run • Entire responsibility of the detector • DCS team provides infrastructure and will help detectors wherever possible • Note that only parameters (datapoints) corresponding to installed equipment will be archived • e.g. only few TOF, TRD modules • Database infrastructure available at Meyrin for ‘surface’ tests or test beams • Little or no request so far Alice Offline week

  8. Central DCS status [details in talk Svetozar, this morning] • Provide infrastructure for the detectors • Computers, network, databases • In use by some detectors since 1 year • Provide transfer from DCS archive to OCDB: • AMANDA, FXS • Infrastructure operational since >1 year • Activity gearing up, but use of archive DB only starting • Installation of Oracle RAC foreseen before end of year • Not essential for December run, current DB infrastructure is sufficient Alice Offline week

  9. Central DCS archiving • Responsible for ‘environment and infrastructure’ monitoring • Temperatures, humidity, atmospheric pressure, B-field • (Technical) infrastructure parameters and status • Whatever is installed is archived • For December run expect to archive • Ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, B-field (Hall) Alice Offline week

  10. Summary • Infrastructure for archiving (and transfer to OCDB, AMANDA) is installed and operational for December run at P2 • Actual archival of DCS parameters by detectors requires effort from detector groups • DCS team will provide pressure and support • ‘Environment’ parameters will be archived • At P2 only archiving of parameters of installed equipment will be archived Alice Offline week
