Early Years of Life • Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh Scotland. He was the 2nd of 3 sons. When he was around 18 to 20, him and his older brother Melly built a machine called, The Little Man. It would always say, Mama! But after the prototype, tragedy struck the Bells’. Aleck’s younger brother got a lung disease, and soon died, then Melly caught it, and died, but when Aleck started to get it, he moved to Canada to heal his lungs.
Life without brothers • Life in Canada for him was very relaxing, and fun. He would wander out into the woods to play. He once found a Mohawk Indian tribe living nearby, and soon became friends with them. He learned the Indian language from them, and used it for his work. He also helped a young boy named Georgie to talk. Because he was deaf, he couldn’t learn how to talk. Aleck later taught him to say, father.
His great telephone • Aleck was experimenting with the telegraph that could send many messages across 1 wire, but he had a strange idea. Could you send multiple voices at once across the same wire? It was a bazaar idea at the time, but this bazaar idea has changed the world as we know it. He started on this idea right away. He found a man to help him, Thomas Watson. An interesting fact about Thomas is he worked in the same place that Thomas Edison worked at.
The telephone works! • Thomas and Aleck worked many stressful nights to make the prototype. When the prototype was finished, it was time to test it out. When they tested it out at first, it didn’t work, but Aleck didn’t give up. He found a bottle of a type of acid, and put a little in a certain part of the device. When he sat down, he accidentally spilled a drop of the acid on his leg, and he screamed, “Watson, come here! I need you!”. Thomas could hear his voice from the telephone. “It worked! It worked!”, Thomas said. They brought Aleck to the doctor, and they celebrated.
I’m the creator! • Once the telephone was made, Aleck finally got married to his love, Mabel. Mabel was the daughter of one of his money suppliers. First he didn’t approve the marriage, but he later did. After the marriage, Aleck had to face another challenge. An American phone company thought they created the telephone 1st, so Aleck sued them. The fight with the judges was harsh for them, but in the end, Aleck won, and he was named, The creator of the telephone.
