3. Mission To advance excellence in the psychosocial care of persons with cancer, their families, and caregivers through networking, education, advocacy, research and resource development. Vision A global society in which oncology care meets the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of all people affected by cancers. 4. 2011-2012 Strategic Priorities Sustainability To ensure the fiscal and organizational sustainability the oncology social work profession generally, and AOSW specifically. Tactics include strategic planning, tactical marketing, fund development planning, branding of OSW, and interdisciplinary education and collaboration. Efforts also include cultivation of strategic partnerships and liaison roles. Access to Care Financial and logistical access to care for patients and families continues to be key barrier to treatment, adherence and activities of daily life across the cancer continuum. Tactics to address these barriers include improved access to resources (SWON, POWER); education of and referral to patient assistance programs and partnerships with pharmaceutical partners. Efforts also include advancing the findings of the IOM report emphasizing the critical importance of access to psychosocial care for people affected by cancer. 5. 2011-2012 Strategic Priorities Cont. Patient Navigation Navigating the cancer care continuum is continuing to be more and more complex. As more resources and personnel are targeting this area, there is more of a need for training and education of these navigators to ensure more comprehensive and consistent service delivery. AOSW is targeting this audience as consumers for training and professional affiliation. Efforts also include expansion of SWON networking and resource integration. Underserved Populations with Special Needs Veterans with cancer, young adults with cancer, rural populations and children with cancer in their family are examples of the various special needs and underserved populations whose numbers continue to grow. Targeted partnership efforts are underway to do research with oncology social workers on these topics and then to implement creation of resources and materials for patients as well as families in these populations. 6. Fiscal Update Sean Hebbel The Board and staff are accountable to the membership for being good stewards of the association’s financial resources. Director-at-Large: Regions 1+2 Midwest/Western States Lisa O’Brien Current Issues and Challenges: • State Representatives are not as easily accessed or recognized as the Board members are. • Members are not renewing and new members are not joining due to perceived discrepancy between benefits and cost of membership. • Spending freezes at agencies who employ AOSW members prohibit many from attending conference and obtaining CEU’s. • Improve social work recognition and necessary support of social workers especially in rural communities. Director-at-Large: Regions 1+2 Midwest/Western States Lisa O’Brien Goals, Recommendations and Plans for Future Development: • List the State Representatives on the website so that current/potential members will know how to reach them. • Communicate regular updates to the State Representatives as to the benefits of membership. • Consider a free trial of 3 months experience of SWON (with restriction of writing). If people get to know how great the members are and how valuable the shared information is, they will be interested in going to the conference and also becoming a member. • Continue to strive to keep costs down for members through less expensive conference destinations. • Make CEU’s from conferences and other resources available on the website. Consider providing free to members and charging for non-members. • Annual group conference call with State Representatives will be planned for late June. Director-at-Large: Region 3 South Tara Schapmire • Region III has highly active membership, with a number of states hosting regional SWOGs and psychosocial oncology conferences.  • SWOGs in some states are involved in advocacy work. Nearly all states in Region III have current state reps.  Vacancy exists in SC. Current Issues and Challenges: Economic Stressors, both for OSWs & for cancer patients: • Institutional support for continuing professional education dwindling. • Some cutbacks in OSW staffing noted in both regions. • Patients delaying/foregoing treatment due to financial concerns.  Increasing layoffs translate to loss of health insurance.  Growing numbers of uninsured & underinsured patients.  AOSW 2012 Annual Business Meeting  June 1, 2012 Boston, MA

Director-at-Large: Region 3 South Tara Schapmire Goals, Recommendations and Plans for Future Development: • Will continue to maintain regular communication with all state reps; learn about strengths, issues & challenges throughout Regions III. • Members are asking about podcasts, teleconferences, and other cost-effective professional development opportunities.  Professional Education budgets are shrinking or nonexistent for many institutions.    • Will continue to look for funding opportunities.   AOSW 2012 Annual Business Meeting  June 1, 2012 Boston, MA

Director-at-Large: Regions 4+5 Northeast/International Iris Fineberg • Members have been busy with advocacy and building professional networks. • Some states have been able to build a state-level group that meets regularly to share information about state and national resources, educational materials and comparisons of the different health care systems in which people work. Director-at-Large: Regions 4+5 Northeast/International Iris Fineberg Challenges: • Some states are finding it difficult to have social work involvement in a state-level group. • Financial constraints are limiting social workers’ ability to be more involved in AOSW. • Social workers are seeing the impact of cut backs on financial programs for patients and families; there are fewer resources and tools for social workers to offer their oncology clients. Goals: • To encourage more oncology social workers in the region who attend state-level meetings to join AOSW. • To support members’ positive efforts to encourage advocacy and collaboration in their areas. • To fill every state representative position in the region and encourage greater representation from the international region. Membership Kim Day **Current membership is HIGHEST EVER 1265! • As membership chair what resonates most is to be able to assist AOSW members with concerns or issues on their minds. • Communication from members directly to me at Kim.Day@UHhospitals.org is essential to that end. Please let me hear about your successes and achievements as they will go in the newsletter in our new "Kudos Column.“ • I also want to know about your concerns and questions especially as they relate to AOSW member services and I will do my best to address them and be the voice of the members on the Board. Communications Catherine Credeur Communications involves the internal communications with our members (SWON, SWORG, NEWS, website) and resources that are available for public education (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, website). Advocacy Christina Austin-Valere Current Issues and Challenges: • Healthcare Reform- affordable care for our patients continues to be a major concern. • Much more emphasis being placed on other unmet needs, such as social factors, environmental issues, and health behaviors of patients. • We need to keep abreast of the changing stages of Medicaid across the nation as the movement to align these benefits with the Affordable Health Care Act by 2015 emerge. Advocacy Christina Austin-Valere Goals, Recommendations and Plans for Future Development: • Monitoring and remaining knowledgeable about the Affordable Care Act & Medicaid Benefits. • Continuing collaborative efforts with existing and new organizations/liaisons. • Supporting legislative workshop(s) at our conference. • Continue to report and facilitate discussions about legislative issues on our AOSW website and newsletter. • Exploring and incorporating Commissioner on Cancer [CoC] Practice Guidelines relating to social work practices.
