Do I give my kid’s a laptop or phone • Creates issues (kid’s don’t have the level of self control or maturity) • Just because a parent might have it, friend, or older sibling doesn’t mean they need it • Should all children in the family be treated the same (is it a privilege
Where do you put computer • High traffic public area • Limit access to any technology (like anything, chocolate) no child should have limitless • REWARDS: If child thrives on a certain piece or technology device, it can be a great motivation MAKE IT A POSITIVE THING! (You can have this much time, once homework is done)
Technology Babysitter • It is easy as a parent to get caught up with allowing kids to use technology when you need time to do something, however the consequences are:
If…But When • What do you do? • Don’t Overreactive. Understand that the moment is going to happen and prepare yourself • Relationship with your kids. Postive and nurturing relationship, so child feels comfortable to come talk. Also taking the parent role and checking history and you may have to have that conversation.
If…But When • Have family discussion and talk about principles of Internet Safety • Help them realize that you know the risks of the internet and that can talk to them. (Be Frank: The day is going to come when you will encounter some of these things. Go through scenarios: example: movie that doesn’t make you feel right. • Let them know that feelings are natural, but what is appropriate
This is a War • They were attacked, and something was forced upon them • Don’t wait until it happens, but talk about it prior. • Talk to spouse and figure out what your guidelines are. Then have a family council in healthy and constructive environment.
If…But When • Address all things that kids might encounter: What else kids encounter besides pornography are such things as making bombs, picking locks, sneaking out, cheating, etc

Chat Rooms • The Point: To talk to people and most of the time do not know • You can’t accidentally get in a chat room • Anonymous -Breed people that say things they don’t normally say • No reason to legitimately be in a chat room( Unless you are an undercover officer) • Where are they? Appears in a lot of areas (Online gaming, sporting websites, etc.
Instant messaging • Particular Applications: Yahoo Messengers • You Invite people, having chats with people you know • Different from chat rooms, but still a danger • Who are their friends? What is the history? A lot of it is innocent, but sometimes they may meet someone on the internet and invite them to instant messages (May say they are talking to Susan across the screen, maybe they are or maybe they are not) • Look for clues: What you to leave or close screen when you come by, shorthand (Adding emotion LOL, ROTF-Rolling on the floor
Shorthand • PA - Parent Alert • PAL-Parents are listening • PANB – Parents are nearby • PAW-Parents are watching • POS- Parents over shoulder • PITR- Parents in the room
Cyberbullying • Situation where a person was instant messaging, got hate messages, and committed suicide.
Benefit of Instant Messaging • Doesn’t interrupt flow of work
