What’s the plan? • To begin filling out your Registration Form – today • Take the form to your current teachers for them to initial recommendations for your courses next year. (last semester’s recommendations should already be on there) • Bring it home – review with your parent/guardian – and get their signature!
The plancontinued… • Bring back your SIGNED Registration form to HR next week – 2/4/13 and 2/5/13. Your HR Teacher will collect ALL forms on 2/5/13! • Individual problems/concerns – Talk to your HR Advisor. • If you need further assistance, contact your counselor, Mrs. Belechak, in the Sidney Lanier Counseling Office. Registration Form – Part I First things First: • Write the basics: • Name, Student ID #, Homeroom Advisor, & Cohort Year (2016) • Academics first: • Circle your future grade level (10) • Take this form to your current academic teachers. They will initial their recommended course for you next year.
Write Your Name, HR Advisor, Student #, and Cohort Graduation Year (2016) Then, Circle the grade level you will be in Next year!....hopefully 10!
You need to obtain teacher recommendations for all core Academic courses, as well as any additional AP classes. (some recommendations may already be on here from last semester) Be advised that new board guidelines require students (& parents) to sign a new AP Expectations contract for all AP courses enrolled. Academic Electives Need to Know: • Academic Challenge! Push yourself! • Note: HOPE Scholarship requirements have changed! • Take advantage of the Science Electives, which also count towards your 4th Science Grad Requirement! (Zoology, Astronomy, Forensic Science, Biology II / AP Bio, etc.) • AP Courses –New Board Guidelines require AP Contract with Teacher, Parent & Student! – These will be completed before summer! • Classes must have at least 15 students to make!

New AP Placement Plan • AP Criteria – students must meet specific academic criteria (including grades and test scores) to be enrolled in AP courses • Students who do not meet this criteria, but still wish to enroll in AP may complete the AP Appeal Form with parent signature (forms are available from your Counselor) • The number of AP courses enrolled per year is restricted as follows: 1 in Ninth, 3 in Tenth, 4 in eleventh, and 4 in twelfth. (exceptions granted based on committee approval) • Students are encouraged to take AP Exams in May. • An extra quality point will be awarded to students whose grade average is 70% or above upon course completion. Registration Form – Part II Second Thing (pages 2-4 of form): • Choose your Pathway-pathways are in many areas: elective pathways, fine arts pathways, foreign language pathway, theater pathway. Pathways can change! • You need to Select Four (4) elective courses • We plan to match all students in their top four selections. If there is a problem, we will contact you! • Our goal is to give your 2013-2014 schedules prior to the last day of school! All info is available on our Registrar’s Website

Electives – Dual Enrollment 1) ACCEL = college credit & HS credit – Juniors & Seniors(CCGA = Requires a 3.0 academic GPA and scores of 500 on both SAT Math and CR)(ATC = Requires 3.0 academic GPA and scores of 450 CR and 440 Math) • HOPE Scholarship is not affected! • Need to contact prospective colleges to ensure they will accept credits (especially if private or out-of-state) • Must see your counselor to apply – additional requirements on website 2) Dual Enrollment – HS & College Technical Credit! • Culinary Arts, Law Enforcement, Cosmetology, Drafting, Certified Nursing Assisting, & Heating/Vent/AC&Refrigeration • Must pass the COMPASS exam before summer break (for Fall) 3) Joint Enrollment: • college courses at night or weekends • Remember : You don’t get a second chance to start your college transcript!
Electives - continued Work-Based Learning (WBL)– Need to Know: • Internships:(through GICA) • Great option for students after completing a pathway • Youth Apprenticeship: (through GICA) • If you know what you want to do when you grow up, this is a great opportunity to get some practice in the real world! • Requires a long-term commitment = 2,000 hours • Marketing Co-op: (through GICA) • Must have completed or be enrolled in the Marketing course See your Counselor for Applicationand details!

HS memories • If you do feel like you are ready, please see your Counselor to discuss the approval process. • What are the benefits of Finishing in Four? • AP Courses – earn college credit FREE of tuition cost! • CTAE Courses = FREE education in a Career! Stand out among college applicants! • Dual Enrollment – ACCEL – at CCGA or ATC • WBL – get paid experience, while in school and network yourself in the industry! • What about Sports, Music, Art, Theater, Clubs, etc….
In Summary: • Registration will begin next Thursday, 1/31/13, during Homerooms. Students will receive a turquoise folder filled with important information, including: • Letter from our Registrar • Registration Form, transcript • 2016 Graduation Requirements • sample 4-year plan • GA course descriptions • On Thursday, they will take their registration form to their current teachers to obtain recommendations for next school year in their academics and possibly other subjects (e.g. fine arts, languages, or CTAE). If students/parents would like to request higher level courses than recommended, please see me for a “Petition for Course Upgrade” form. • Please plan to spend some time this weekend with your child reviewing these materials and helping them complete the Registration Form (be sure to write a Pathway Selection and sign) • Homeroom again on 2/4 and 2/5-when registration form is due!
