  2. PETER THE GREAT • What is a leader? • What kind of changes do we need in Puerto Rico?

  3. PETER THE GREAT • A leader is "a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a goal". A reminder for this definition would be 3P's – Person with a Purpose to influence People. http://www.vtaide.com/gleanings/leader.htm

  4. PETER THE GREAT • Peter was one of the most famous tsars in Russian history.

  5. PETER THE GREAT • People in Russia were uncivilized, uneducated, and cruel.

  6. PETER THE GREAT • Russia had no courts or court systems, nor system of government.

  7. PETER THE GREAT • People lived in poverty, misery, and fear.

  8. PETER THE GREAT • Peter ruled with his half brother Ivan and his half sister Sophia. When Ivan died in 1696, Peter ruled alone.

  9. PETER THE GREAT • Peter was unique in many ways. He was six feet eight inches tall. He had great physical strength.

  10. PETER THE GREAT • Peter wanted Russia to be as great as European countries.

  11. PETER THE GREAT • He tried to learn everything he could when he went to Europe and disguised himself as a common soldier.

  12. PETER THE GREAT • Russians in Europe had bad manners, and their customs were peculiar. They used chairs to make fire, and shot their guns at priceless paintings.

  13. PETER THE GREAT • Peter’s dream was to create a powerful Russian navy, so he learned shipbuilding.

  14. PETER THE GREAT • He also learned watchmaking and studied the human body. He sent machinery to Russia, scientific equipment, and even an English coffin.

  15. PETER THE GREAT • Peter forced change in his country. He was cruel and heartless. Peter even ordered his own son, Alexis, to be killed because he did not agree with his father’s methods .

  17. PETER THE GREAT • He developed a new system of government and started Russia’s first newspaper.

  20. PETER THE GREAT • Peter put a tax on everything. He left people without money. They paid taxes on everything from boots to drinking water.

  21. PETER THE GREAT • He also wanted to make changes in people’s personal lives. All men had to shave their beards. To use a beard, the man paid taxes.

  22. PETER THE GREAT • At the time, men had complete power over women, so Peter also improved the lives of Russian women.

  23. PETER THE GREAT • He made men and women eat together. • He made them dress like Europeans. • Women were not permitted to paint their teeth. • They could choose their husbands, contrary to tradition.

  24. PETER THE GREAT • Peter wanted more land for his country. He went to war with Sweden and took over a lot of land. • He built a new capital city, Saint Petersburg.

  25. PETER THE GREAT • Peter died at the age of 53. Even though he died relatively young, Peter the Great transformed Russia into a modern power.
