RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTS IN THE CHURCH Romans 12:1-8
RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTSIN THE CHURCH • The placing of natural gift potential through creation by the Spirit of God. • The giving of natural talents to each individual in the forming of personality, adaptivity, interests. • After conversion, these natural tendencies are intensified for Christ’s purposes(Romans 12). • Specific endowments are given to enable them to fulfill responsibility in Christ’s Body (Ephesians 4). • When the Spirit would wish His presence to supply a need (I Corinthians 12).
RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTSIN THE CHURCH From I Corinthians 12:14-26 we learn: * God created each member to do a certain task (vv 14-18). * Our differences are essential and remind us how much we need each other (vv 19-21). * Every member without exception is absolutely essential to the body (22-24). * We are most happy and enjoy a loving unity when each member functions properly (vv 25,26).
RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTSIN THE CHURCH Romans 12:1-8: * We must be totally submitted to God (v.1). * We must not be worldly with selfish, sinful living (v. 2a) * Through renewed minds we must actually prove out in genuine experience the will of God (v. 2b). * Through humility and clear thinking we are to discover ourselves (v. 3) * When we know our gift, we are to concentrate on it (vv. 4-8).
RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTSIN THE CHURCH • PROPHECY: * Declaring truth, insight. The ability to see where people or programs are. The motivation to make motives right. * MEETS THE SPIRITUAL NEEDS OF THE CHURCH. * Biblical example: John the Baptist. * Brings people to accountability, right motivations, and inner conviction. * “You shouldn’t eat ice cream in the house of God!”
RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTSIN THE CHURCH • SERVING: * Practical assistance, help. The ability to see and do things that need to be done. The motivation to demonstrate love by rendering assistance. * MEETS THE PRACTICAL NEEDS OF THE CHURCH. * Biblical example: Martha * Servers concentrate more on the task than long-range goals. * “I will clean up the mess!”
RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTSIN THE CHURCH • TEACHING: * Clarifying truth. The ability to impart knowledge and to lead others into revealed truth. * MEETS THE MENTAL NEEDS OF THE CHURCH. * Biblical example: Apollos * He had a ministry of watering, not planting. Teachers stress accuracy and are well-versed in scripture. * “Now the reason it fell was because . . .”
RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTSIN THE CHURCH • EXHORTING: * Personal progress, encouragement. The motivation to stimulate faith and personal growth in others. * MEETS THE PERSONAL NEED OF THE CHURCH. * Biblical example: Barnabas * Exhorters tend to be greatly loved, for they are positive in attitude and outlook. * “Just hold it tighter next time.”
RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTSIN THE CHURCH • GIVING: * Special sharing of material assistance. The ability to share assets to see the needs of the work of God and the ministry of others succeed. * MEETS THE FINANCIAL/MATERIAL NEEDS OF THE CHURCH. * Biblical example: Abraham. * The ability to act on behalf of others when there is a valid need. * “Here’s some money to buy another one!”
RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTSIN THE CHURCH • FACILITATING: * Greek: “One who stands in front of others.” This depicts one who gives leadership aid to others. * MEETS THE EFFECTIVENESS NEEDS OF THE CHURCH. * Biblical example: Nehemiah. * A facilitator leads by working with and through others. * “You go get the mop; You go get the water!”
RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTSIN THE CHURCH • SHOWING MERCY: * Personal support, empathizing. The ability to feel where people are and identify with their need. To give comfort. * MEETS THE EMOTIONAL NEEDS OF THE CHURCH. * Biblical example: The Good Samaritan. * When he saw the wounded, he had compassion and felt the distress. * “I know just how you feel, I’ve done it myself!”
RECOGNIZING SPIRITUAL GIFTSIN THE CHURCH • I PETER 4:10,11: “As everyone has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. “If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. “If anyone ministers (serves), let him do it with the ability which God supplies. “. . .that in all things God may be glorified.”
