Eating Habits Breakfast is served upon awakening. It is typically light- a hot beverage with some sort of pastry. Lunch is served between 2:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon. It is the main meal, and is typically larger than other meals. Dinner is usually served between 9:00 and 11:00 in the evening. It is usually light. Tapas are snacks. You typically go out for tapas with a small group of friends. Siestas are a time in the afternoon when all businesses close and people go home to eat with their families. This is usually from noon to two. Wine is almost always a drink choice in Spain. It is typical to engage in Sobremesa, or conversations during and after a meal.
Food Served in Spain Tapas (snacks) can be calamari, cod fritters, gambaspilpil (prawns in hot garlic oil), chorizo (a type of sausage), paella (rice dish), and sometimes even the restaurant’s specialty split among friends. Breakfast is usually very light and consists of some type of hot drink and a pastry. Croissants are typical, although some people dip churros sprinkled in sugar in hot chocolate. Lunch usually has several courses in Spain. The first course is usually something light- like salad or soup. The second course is usually a dish with meat in it. Dessert is unpredictable. It can be anything from fruit to flan to cake. Spaniards usually eat this after lunch. Coffee is usually served after dessert. Dinner is usually much smaller than lunch. It usually consists of something light, like a salad, sandwich, or a selection of tapas.
Beverages in Spain Sangria- wine, juice, brandy, and fruit pieces. Tinto de Verano- red wine and lemonade. Cava wine- the spanish equivalent to Champagne. Pacharán- a type of liquor made from wild plums Caffeinated Drinks- Coffee, tea, soda, etc.
