  2. What are we learning today? • That alcohol abuse is a risk to health and well being. • Understand why people drink. • Understand the Physical, intellectual, emotional and social effects of drinking alcohol • Understand the risks to health of drinking.

By the end of the lesson I..... • Must • Be able to give 3 reasons why people drink alcohol. • Describe 5 effects alcohol has on the body and the mind and distinguish whether these are physical, intellectual, emotional and social. • Describe and explain 5 risks of drinking on health and well being • Should • Identify the specialist terminology and definitions. • Could • Distinguish between short term and long term risks to health • Give and explain more than 5 risks to health of drinking.

  4. The Law. • Illegal to give alcohol to under 5’s • Under 14’s can only go into a pub if they have a ‘children’s licence’ • 14/15 year old- can enter pub but not drink • 16/17 year olds- can drink if eating food • Under 18- illegal to buy alcohol. Illegal to buy alcohol for someone aged 18. • 18 years + - can buy alcohol legally in licensed premises.

  5. What affect does alcohol have on our body? • Stomach absorbs alcohol into the blood. • When alcohol enters the body it soon effects the brain, carried there by the bloodstream. When alcohol effects the brain it alters its function. Affecting our ability to make judgements.

  6. Why do people drink? • In small amounts alcohol can give the drinker a lot of pleasure. • A small amount can make a person feel relaxed. • It reduces inhibitions so a person will feel less shy and nervous. • Drinking is a social activity- Enjoyed with friends. • Alcohol is a positive part of life for most people. • In the UK, alcohol plays an important part in our social lives. ‘Pub Culture’
