  2. Combat • Trench Warfare • The Western Front • The English Channel to the Swiss border. • “No Man’s Land” : area between the trenches. • Technology • Poison gas • Tanks • Airplanes • Machine guns (later attached to airplanes in dogfights)

  3. The Americans and Victory • 2 million American troops • Called “Doughboys” • Admiral William S. Sims • Convoys of merchant ships and troop transports would be escorted across the Atlantic by warships.

  4. Russia Leaves the War • Riots in March 1917 caused by: • Anti-government Lenin • Scarcity of food and fuel. • Czar Nicholas II had abdicated the throne. • Bolsheviks (Communists) came to power. • Vladimir Lenin was their leader. • Russian government overthrown and Communist government established.

  5. German Offensive Falters • Massive attack on the Western Front. • American and French troops blocked the German drive on Paris at the town of Chateau-Thierry.

  6. Battle of Argonne Forest • French General Ferdinand Foch, commander of Allied Forces. • Massive American offensive • General John Pershing [Black Jack] • Most massive attack in American history • 600,000 American troops. • Germans inflicted heavy casualties, but Americans had shattered the German defenses. • War ends: 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month an armistice was signed.

  7. The War Ends • Problems for the Central Powers: • Revolution in Austri-Hungary, • Ottoman Turks surrendered, • a mutiny in Kiel , • the people of Berlin rose in rebellion and forced the German emperor to step down.

  8. The War Ends, continued • 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918 the Great War comes to an end! • Armistice: a ceasefire is signed.
