The experimental investigation results on a FORD MVH 418 engine showed that under 1750 rpm and the extreme retard angle of 30 degree from the normal spark timing, the catalyst lightoff time can be shortened to 30 seconds from 270 seconds at a normal timing condition. Results: Ignition timing control strategies Exhaust flow rate under different ignition retard levels • Exhaust temperature at different ignition retard levels CO conversion efficiency at different ignition retard levels HC conversion efficiency at different ignition retard levels NO conversion efficiency at different ignition retard levels Legend: 0-Normal spark timing; 1-6CA retard; 2- 12CA retard; 3- 18CA retard; 4- 24CA retard; 5- 30CA retard Supervisor: A/P Chan Siew Hwa Student: Hoang Dinh Long
