what? What is this pathogen and why is it dangerous? • Streptococcus Pneumoniaea Gram-positive nonmotile bacterium. • It is dangerous because it causes many diseases including: • Pneumonia • Bacteremia • Meningitis • All of these bacterial infections can be deadly.
how? How does this pathogen attack its victims? • Bacteria invading the lungs and then multiplying it causes pneumonia, one of the most common diseases caused by streptococcus pneunmoniae. • When streptococcus pneunmoniaeinvade a persons bloodstream and then multiplies it cause bacteremia. • If this pathogen invades and multiplies in the covering of the brain it can cause meningitis. Lung infected with streptococcus pneumoniae causing pneumonia.
who? Which people are most commonly affected by this pathogen? • All people can be infected by streptococcuspnuemoniae, however people: • Under the age of 2 or older than 65, • People with weak immune systems from leukemia, cancer, HIV, sickle cell disease, • People without a functioning spleen, • And those with chronic illnesses including diabetes, lung, heart and kidney disease, are especially susceptible to getting disease from this pathogen.
symptoms • Pneumonia: Chills, fever, fast breathing or loss of breath, chest pain, cough in adults . In children the symptoms may be similar to those of adults. • Meningitis: for people over the age of two years the symptoms include very high fever, headache, and a stiff neck. Nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, and being tiered. In children under the age of two normal symptoms are appearing slow, irritable, vomiting, or poorly feeding.
