Reading Workshop Units of study over the course of the year will include: • Readers Build Good Habits • Readers Use Strategies to Figure Out Words • Readers Think and Talk About Books to Grow Ideas • Readers Pursue Their Interests in Books and Other Texts
What does Reading Workshop Look Like in First Grade? Reading Workshop begins with a teacher- led mini-lesson (usually ten minutes or less).
Independent Reading Time The mini-lesson is followed by independent work time w/instruction: • Children are engaged in private reading time. • Teacher provides instruction during reading conferences and small group work.
Reading Share Session Reading Workshop ends with a teaching share time. The teaching share time may: • Reinforce the mini-lesson • Add-on to the mini-lesson • Preview an upcoming mini-lesson
Writing Workshop Units of study over the course of the year will include: • Personal Narrative/ “Small Moments” • Procedural/ “How-To” • Report/ “All About” • Poetry • Response to Literature
What does Writing Workshop Look Like in First Grade? Writing Workshop begins with a teacher- led mini-lesson (usually ten minutes or less). • Spaces between words • Stretching and writing words • Coming up with ideas for writing • Writing longer texts • How to do our best writing work Sample recent mini-lesson topics:

Mathematics Our school district uses a standards-based program: Everyday Math. -
Everyday Mathematics is . . . • A comprehensive Pre-K through 6th grade mathematics curriculum. • Rigorous and balanced. • Consistent with how children actually learn mathematics: it builds on understanding over a period of time, first through informal exposure and then through more formal and directed instruction.
The “Spiral” Philosophy • Mathematical content is taught in a repeated fashion, beginning with concrete experiences. Children using EM are expected to master a variety of mathematical skills and concepts, but not the first time they are encountered. • Children need to revisit topics, concepts, and skills and then relate them to each other in new and different ways.
In first grade, the following are emphasized: • Investigating whole numbers (counting, reading and writing numbers). • Understanding addition and subtraction facts.

What Does Math Time Look Like? • Math Meeting • Mini-Lesson • Math Stations—small groups rotate through structured games and activities related to lesson. One of the stations is teacher-led.

Technology Through in-class and computer lab explorations, first graders will: • Identify basic computer parts • Navigate with a mouse • Recognize and use keys
Technology (continued . . .) • Students will also use paint tools to create a picture. • Their knowledge of word processing is further developed by learning how to enter, select and delete text.
