About Ketterlinus Elementary School Named after Elizabeth “Lizzie” Ketterlinuswho donated the land to the school district in 1924. *Opened as a high school (“Mullets”) and became a middle school (“Hornets”) and eventually an elementary school. *Our mascot is “Lizzie” the Dolphin.

Teaching Reading is Urgent A student at the 10th percentile reads about 60,000 words a year in 5th grade. A student at the 50th percentile reads about 900,000 words a year in 5th grade. Average students receive about 15 times as much practice in a year. (Anderson, Wilson, & Fielding, 1988)
2nd Grade Expectations • Display the six pillars of character: Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Citizenship, Trustworthiness, and Fairness • Follow all Classroom, Hallway & Playground Rules • Be an appropriate role model for our younger students: be safe, courteous and thinking at all times. • Do their best on all assignments and tasks. • Fill in planner with homework and have it signed by a parent or guardian each night, complete any homework assignment and return folder to school each day. Student and Parent sign AVID communication tool nightly.
Homework • Total of 30 minutes • Daily Reading & Writing • Sometimes Math & other projects • Return homework in folder • Please sign planner to show that homework was completed

We NEED YOU! • All volunteers must be approved and sign in at the front desk. • We are looking for volunteers who are willing to work in any 2nd grade class (not just your child’s class). • The most important things you can do to help are: • read school and class newsletters (be sure to check email for electronic versions) • check your child’s folder daily • ensure your child is reading for 30 mins.
