  2. Talking points -- • faculty talked about the wonderful experience of being in General Studies. A mix of people in the studios produced “art” rather than class projects. • I took General Studies. I can guarantee you – every General Studies (major) was in a class because (he or she) wanted to be. • The open ended program… when I was doing my diploma I took open classes – open studios. Half my timetable was open. Independent studies. I spent my time in the metal shop. You could just produce a body of work. • Everybody worked in an interdisciplinary way

  3. Fab studios was open-access. Students could step out of (any) program stream. • But too many students chose (the General Studies) route. it became unwieldy and it was dismantled. • Those (GS final year projects) got changed into Thesis • We’ve systematically dismantled (General Studies) to move out of a “trade school” model to become more academic. We’ve elevated our quality of learning. • What’s weak now is our studio-based activity.

  4. Problems of today - • Some (Program core) courses and prerequisites have nothing to do with what (students) want to do • (current film) curriculum is repetitive. • The overall structure of organizing a film set is similar. Could we create a 200-level “fundamentals” course about this ?

  5. (we need some) specialty (concentrations) in (an ascending) sequence (of levels of leaarning). For example HD video must be taught this way • We could (also) have a pool of shared “fundamental” courses across the whole university. • The Faculty of Art could be shaped like a ball, you could enter “the commonwealth” of shared resources from any position. • Not a linear line (rather a) generalist approach.
