Convincing People • You have 5 minutes. • Pick a Partner • Brainstorm the best way to convince people to do things – persuasion techniques
Origins • Lobbying comes from early 1800’s when members of Congress didn’t have offices. • People who wanted time with Congressmen would wait in the lobbies of Congress.
Today • More varied techniques for talking with Congress members • Direct lobbying = face-to-face meetings • Indirect lobbying = arranging for a third party to meet with the official, writing letters, publishing articles, calling for support • Lobbyist today can be full time for large interest groups or small groups can buy a “share” of a lobbyists time
Who are lobbyists? • Lobbyists are usually people with some sort of political experience and knowledge of a specific area • Example: you want to fight for private land rights in the west. You hire the former official from the Department of Interior. • “revolving door” is criticized for giving an unfair advantage • What advantages does this give? • http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/top.php
Lobbying for Extra Credit • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkbdbRjMX2Y&feature=endscreen&NR=1 • You will pick one thing you want to change about the school and explain why you want to change it. • It must be relevant and helpful to the student population (try to improve the school). • Write up a proposition, then using the persuasion techniques learned in class, lobby to either Mr. Carner OR Mr. Schroeder, or three other teachers. • You must have the administration or teachers sign your proposition.
