Predictive Thermometry:Definition A means of determining (predicting) body temperature by using an electronic device (thermometer) that uses a computer method or algorithm that relates the temperature response of the probe sensor to time
Oral: In the sublingual pocket of the mouth Rectal: A widely held “gold standard” Axillary: Skin temperature at armpit Common Predictive Thermometry Temperature Sites
Has the patient had a hot or cold drink in the last 20 minutes? This can affect temperature readings (higher or lower) Does the patient smoke? When was the last time he/she smoked (last 20 minutes)? This can affect temperature readings Taking An Oral Temperature PRECAUTIONS
If the patient is unable to breath through the nose during a temperature reading, a “mouth breather” can impact the final temperature reading (lower) The patient should avoid talking during a temperature reading Wait two (2) minutes between temperature readings to avoid the Drawdown effect. 98.6oF is not an absolute value! Does the patient have stool in the rectal cavity. This can impair an accurate reading? Is the patient’s temperature changing rapidly (Rewarming from surgery or during a fever pattern)? How A Regular Thermometer Works 37° C Direct Mode Thermometers work like Glass Thermometers do. They start at room temperature and take several minutes to reach equilibrium. 3-4 MINUTES (DIRECT MODE) The FasTemp goes into direct mode if the patients temperature is below 35,5 ° C deg or if tissue contact is poor. Removing The Isolation Chamber A • Grasp the isolation chamber from behind. Using your index finger on the locking tab (A) and slide unit up to pull off • To replace align rails and slide of new isolation chamber down until locking tab clicks into place
To Change Probes • Pull forward on the top of the connector (A), rotating neck out of its locked position. Slide down to remove. Attach new, matching blue or red probe in reverse manner. Snap neck firmly into place A

Make sure that the thermometer is is the oral mode (blue isolation chamber). Once you remove the probe from the isolation chamber, an icon will appear on the screen indicating the mode. Place the thermometer probe into the patient’s mouth. In order to activate the Pulse Timer, simply press the round button on the front panel once. An icon will appear on the screen. Press again to start and press again to stop. A beep will sound after 15 seconds, then 30 seconds. Using The Pulse Timer Pulse Timer NOTE: The probe must be left in the probe well for the Pulse Timer to work properly
Remove the isolation chamber form the back of the thermometer. Remove the soft rubber battery cover. Then pull up on the ribbon to remove the battery. Replace the battery and place the rubber cover back on to the battery compartment.
