Presentation to European Air Tightness Association Introduction to the UK’s Air Tightness Testing & Measurement Association
Air Tightness Testing & Measurement Association • Trade Association since 2002 • Members are UKAS-accredited Air Tightness Testing ORGANISATIONS • Currently Affiliated to BINDT (British Institute of Non Destructive Testing) • 15 member firms (circa 100 testing staff in total) • Members acknowledged by all UK stakeholders as being competent to test any building type • ATTMA produces and maintains the air-tightness testing methodology documents that have to be complied with for UK Building Regulations air-tightness testing purposes.
UK Air Tightness Tester Certification All Buildings Dwellings Only Approved Trainers: STROMA & BSRIA The BINDT L1 Air Tester Scheme
Challenges • Apathy – made worse by Recession - & Ignorance • By Government, Inspectors (BCBs), Builders, Owners • Lack of Effective Tester Regulation • Many Testers are Certified Individuals. Their Company’s are NOT regulated • Test Results are not published – therefore not open to scrutiny and challenge • ATTMA is not the “Competent Person Scheme” Operator for Air Tightness Testing… BINDT is.
ATTMA’s Objectives • Admit New Members – ALL UKAS Testers • Influence BINDT to improve the Domestic Tester Scheme • Attain Licence from UK Government to run a separate Competent Persons Scheme • Introduce Public Database of Test Results • Raise standards of COMPETENCE and RELIABILITY among all testers • Lobby against unregulated testers and testing companies • Promote Air Tightness Benefits • Undertake Research (to support the above)
