  2. Definitions Freshman-a first year student, a newcomer • What are some reasons why this word may be perceived as negative? • What is at the heart of this word and why is deemed inappropriate?

Definitions Fresh-Man • Fresh-as an adjective-new, recent, newly made, recently arrived • Man- an adult male human being; contrasted with woman; a male person who has reached adulthood • Consider this, prior to the 20th century the word man was used typically to include women by implication, though preferring primarily to males. (OED.com) However now it is frequently understood to exclude women whenever used.

Definitions Freshman • In society we have changed the way we use language because of the original meaning behind certain words? • Consider words such as bondsman, barman, clergyman, countryman, landsman, linesman, salesman, seaman, and a postman • Where do we as Student Affairs Professionals fall in line with this standard?
