Brief History • 1869 Illinois Sheriff supplied his deputies with early style bicycles • Late 1880s British Police used tricycles and Boston Park Commission police used high wheel bicycles • By 1894, Brooklyn, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Philadelphia all had formal bike units • Early 20th Century saw a steady rise in bike units until the 30s and 40s when the car became increasingly popular • 1970s saw a rise in police bike units with the increasing popularity of community policing • Early 1990s EMS Departments began using bikes
Advantages for Police Departments • Highly mobile • Use all senses • Approachability factor • Silent • Response time reduced in high traffic areas
Advantages for Emergency Medical Service Departments • Get to the scene faster • Care can be administer earlier • The earlier the care the higher the survival rate
Advantages for Security Departments • Highly mobile • Use all senses • Approachability factor • Response time • Cheaper than using a vehicle
