  3. More open, more inclusive • In late 2013, the Glasgow Youth Council decided to open up its membership to enable us to welcome onboard a lot more young people. Our ambition, in the future, will be to have a fully elected Youth Council but we believed that having a partially elected Youth Council which was open to all was, in these early stages, a much more important priority.

  4. The composition of the Youth Council The Glasgow Youth Council is made up of 16 democratically elected MSYPs from 8 constituencies. Alongside this is 25 Youth Councillors who represent Areas(North West, North East and South), Education Establishments and the city at large.

  5. Meaningful Engagement, Stronger Young People A Voice for Young People in Glasgow • The Glasgow Youth Council has made progress in becoming a recognised voice for young people in Glasgow. In March 2013, the Public Petitions & General Purposes Committee of Glasgow City Council voted to have the Glasgow Youth Council as a ‘validating body’ for petitions. This arrangement means that 12-25 year olds can come the Youth Council and ask us to fastrack their petition as well as ask for support in drafting. • The first Youth Council in Scotland to ever have this kind of status in a local authority petitions committee

  6. Working in partnership • One of our key aims is to work in partnership for Glasgow’s young people. We have been proud to have Glasgow Life as our key partner. Their support has been invaluable. We have also increased the number of partners in our various projects this year which has allowed us to expand our role as the voice of young people in Glasgow. Our thanks to Glasgow Life, the Scottish Youth Parliament, Young Scot, The Co-Operative Foundation, the British Youth Council, Glasgow City Council and many others. Working in partnership

  7. Representing Glasgow on the UK stage We continue to be full members of the British Youth Council and participate as fully as possible in their activities. In September 2012, we sent 2 representatives to the BYC Annual Council Meeting in Cardiff and we have also had one of our members on the UK Youth Select Committee on Transport. On top of this, Glasgow hosted the first BYC Scotland Members Meeting to help provide better links between the Scottish member organisations.

  8. A representative and democratic youth voice • Not party political • Represents young people across Scotland, taking action on issues affecting them • MSYPs (Members of the Youth Parliament) are democratically elected

  9. The Glasgow Youth Council and the 2014 Referendum • The Glasgow Youth Council is a non-partisan organization that aims to represent all young people, 12-25 in Glasgow. We are committed over the referendum period to remain a neutral organisation on the question of Scottish Independence or not. We will support local members who wish to hold events that bring together the two campaigns to discuss the referendum with young people. With Votes at 16 coming in for the referendum, a large part of our role will be encouraging 16-25 year olds to come out and vote in the referendum, regardless of which way they want to vote. No work will be undertaken with one campaign and any GYC events/information on this issue will either come from recognised neutral sources or will be consulted on with both official campaigns.

  10. Events & Participation • This year, events have taken a lower priority in the Youth Council to allow us to focus efforts on recruiting new members and securing our future. However, we have taken part and lead in two key events with differing aims. • This event aimed to celebrate the achievements of young people. We worked with The Co-Operative Foundation, Truth About Youth, Young Scot, The Scottish Youth Parliament and Glasgow Life to deliver the event on 4th August 2012 in the Glasgow Royal Concert Halls. We had sports activities, a human library, stalls and young performers.

  11. Meaningful Engagement, Stronger Young People Participation in One Day • Find Your Voice was our MSYP & Youth Council information and recruitment day. Held in November 2012, the event aimed to give participants information on the Youth Council and how they can take part. Lead by Glasgow Life and supported by the Youth Council and the Scottish Youth Parliament, it was open to any young person in Glasgow. • A Voice for Young People- Looking to the future
