Chlamydia • 3 million Americans infected each year • Infect the penis, vagina, cervix, anus, urethra, eye, or throat. • Often has no symptoms (3 out of 4 women and Half of men have no symptoms) • Common symptoms include: abdominal pain, abnormal discharge, burning while urinating, swelling of vagina or testicles, painful intercourse.

  6. Chlamydia • Spread • Vaginal and anal intercourse (rarely oral sex) • Complications include • Infertility and Sterility • Woman can pass it to baby (pink eye or pneumonia) • Treatment- Antibiotics **

  7. Antibiotic Treatment ** • Abstain from intercourse until treated. • Get retested 3 months later. • Take all the prescribed medicine. Even if the symptoms go away, the infection may still be in your body until treatment is complete. • Make sure your partner(s) is/are treated at the same time so you don't give gonorrhea to each other again. • Do not share your medicine with anyone. • Consult your health care provider if you have symptoms after treatment.

Syphilis • 36,000 Americans each year • Infect vagina, anus, urethra, penis, lips and mouth. • Treatment available in early stages • 3 Stages • Primary Stage- Sores appear (chancre) appear in 3 weeks-90 days. Last for 3-6 weeks without treatment. May appear on penis, vagina, cervix, or mouth. • Secondary Stage- 3-6 weeks after primary stage. Body rashes on hands or feet, swollen glands, hair loss. Can come and go for 2 years. • Late Stage- 10-30 years later. Paralysis, dementia. Damage internal organs including brain, nerves, and bones. Can result in death

  12. Trichomonaisis • 8 million Americans infected each year • Often No symptoms • Common symptoms include: abdominal pain, abnormal discharge, burning while urinating, swelling of vagina or testicles, painful intercourse.

  13. Trichomonaisis • Spread • Vaginal intercourse • Complications • Can last for years without treatment • Can be passed from mother to baby • Treatment • Antibiotics • 1 in 5 people in contract it again within 3 months

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) • Half of all men and 3 out of 4 women have HPV at some point in their lives • Some strands can be prevented • Most infections have no harmful effect • Low risk- genital warts • High risk-lead to cervical cancer • Most infections go away in 8-13 months. Some do not go away. • No symptoms-Woman go for PAP test

Hepatitis B • 46,000 Americans each year • Many states require vaccine for school children. • Hepatitis A- Infected fecal matter ingested • Hepatitis C- Blood • When symptoms occur 6 weeks-6 months after infected • (early) abdominal pain, fatigue, nausea, fever • (late) severe abdominal pain, jaundice

  17. Hepatitis B • Spread • Exchange of semen, vaginal fluids, blood, urine • Complications • No cure, but more people recover in 4-8 weeks • 1 out of 20 infected will be a carrier • Can be fatal due to liver damage

  18. Herpes • 8 of 10 American adults have oral herpes • 1 of 4 American adults have genital herpes • Symptoms flare up every few months, last for 1-2 weeks • (oral) cold sores in mouth • (genital) blisters, sores, painful intercourse, burn when urinate

HIV/AIDS • 980,000 cases reported, 40,000 each year • HIV has few or no symptoms for years, may develop into AIDS • Symptoms of HIV • Swollen glands, fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches • Symptoms of AIDS • Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease and other infections, unexplained dizziness, shortness of breath, skin rashes, discolored lesions on skin, decreased mental abilities

  21. HIV/AIDS • Spread • Blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk • Complications • HIV may to lead to AIDS • AIDS does not kill people, an infection that someone with AIDS gets may be fatal • Treatment • No Cure • Medication available to strengthen immune system
