JOHN BROWN’S PLAN – Brown wanted to capture the arsenal and then help revolting slaves gain their freedom
15. What was the result of John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry?
John Brown’s plan does not work – no slaves revolt and join him and some of his men are killed Brown is arrested and charged with treason and murder – he is sentenced to hang
The North feels Brown is a hero, the South is glad he is dead His death brings the slavery issue to the boiling point and many southerners talk about leaving the Union

Lincoln and Douglas fight over the North and the West. Breckenridge tries to steal the South. Bell tries to glue the map (Union) back together.
John Bell: Bless my soul I give up. John C. Breckinridge: That long legged Abolitionist is getting ahead of us after all. Stephen Douglas: I never ran so in my life.
Breckenridge Lincoln Dred Scott Douglas Bell John C. Breckinridge dances with James Buchanan. Dred Scott seated plays the violin. Lincoln dances with African American woman. John Bell dances with Native American. Stephen Douglas dances with a sovereign in rags.

The South is afraid that Lincoln will now try to abolish slavery in the U.S.

SECEDE – to withdraw from the Union, split with the country South Carolina becomes the first to secede on December 20, 1860
In the next six weeks more states secede: Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas
These states form their own country – THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA
