  1. 5S Implementation Process 1. Establish a 5S Steering Committee 8. Review & Improve The 5S implementation process is a Lean methodology used to organize and improve workplace efficiency and safety. The 5S methodology is comprised of five principles: Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain. § Form a 5S Steering Committee and structure it along the same vertical lines as the implementing organization § 5S Steering Committee members must be strongly motivated and capable § The committee is responsible for planning, implementation, goals setting, promoting 5S activities, etc. § 5S Steering Committee should ensure that the 5S activities are on-going so as to sustain the 5S implementation process § 5S Steering Committee should conduct an annual review at the minimum § Renew and improve the 5S Steering Committee and the supporting structures 1 2. Define a 5S Implementation Plan Establish a 5S Steering Committee 7. Conduct 5S Audits 8 Review & Improve § The Evaluation & Certification Office should define the 5S audit schedule, audit criteria and audit checklist § Post audit results on the 5S activity board of the audited area § Use visual tools, e.g. Rader Chart § Audited team needs to formulate action plan to improve its performance § 5S Planning Office needs to formulate plans for 5S implementation activities § Cascade the 5S plan down to the division, department and lower levels § Tailor plans to suit each division/dept. § Hold 5S promotional activities to clearly explain 5S and answer questions from staff § Plan and launch a “5S Day” 2 Conduct 5S Audits Define a 5S Implementation Plan THE EIGHT STEPS OF 5S IMPLEMENTATION 7 3. Mass Rollout 3 Launch Mass Rollout § Launch 5S communication sessions for the various target audiences § Leverage on available meetings/platforms that facilitate two-way communication § Use a wide range of communication channels, e.g. face-to-face, email, etc. § Adopt the 5W & 1H format for communication § Debrief 5S pilot teams after completion of the pilot runs § Make adjustments as needed based on pilot experiences § Develop a mass rollout plan that includes the sequence of events, roles and responsibilities and performance metrics § Use project management tools Communications Campaign 6 Provide 5S Training & Education Start 5S Pilots 4 5 4. Start 5S Pilots § Designate model areas to start 5S pilots § Select 1-3 pilots based on strong leadership and people who are motivated and open to making changes and improvement § Use the strategy of scoring quick-hits by targeting the low-hanging fruits § Keep records and measurements § Train and educate all management and staff § Stress the “what is in it for me” at the operator level § Develop training plans to support the 5S initiative, e.g. target audience, training topics, training methods, facilitation and resources “Good workplaces develop beginning with the 5S's.
