Early Life • On July 24, 1897, Amelia Mary Earhart was born in Atchison, a small town in northeastern Kansas to Edwin Stanton Earhart, a railroad lawyer, and Amy Otis Earhart. Amelia spent much of her childhood with her upper-middle class maternal grandparents and her sister, Muriel, in Atchison.
First airplane • In 1921, Amelia bought her first plane, a used KinnerAirster biplane, nicknamed, “the Canary” because of its bright yellow paint job.
Flying solo • On May 20-21, 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first female pilot to successfully fly across the Atlantic Ocean alone. Earhart departed from Newfoundland and landed in Northern Ireland where a small museum now stands.
July 2, 1937 • On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan, her only crew member, take off from Lae, New Guinea en route to Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean. Earhart and Noonan are unable to find the island and lose radio contact with the Coast Guard. Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan are never found.
