Mobile Team Training • What? • Tailor made ELW training delivered abroad • Why? • Lower costs, increase attractiveness • More students can be taught • ELW staff enjoy broadening experience • Relieves burden on ELW resources eg classrooms, therefore more courses at ELW • Relieves pressure on limited DSL accommodation • In-country language training leads to new business
Congo • DA requested 6 wk ELT for 12 Congolese Army Officers at DSL • Planning process: • Establish student SLP level • Timetable/course produced and endorsed • Resources allocated • 15hrs before student arrival DA called to say students would not arrive • New Plan • Security: • Dedicated driver • In-country brief/mobiles • Maintain comms throughout
Congo • Requirement v Reality: • Students old enemies, no hostility • Common language French • Not General Interpreters’ ELT, Sub Saharan Defence Force • Not SLP3 • Virtually no resources, PCs limited electricity • Training 0830-1430, no breaks • Students have minimal education • No understanding of modern words
Congo • Requirement v Reality (cont’d): • Reasonable grammar, no functional skills • TEFL English, little professional English • Deprogramming students from TV English • Success
Sudan • DA requested 8 wk ELT • Sudanese logistics = no TNA • Security: • Check Security status • Main UK organisations were informed • Medical Training • Military Intelligence/In-country Briefs • Sat Comms • Mine/Situational Awareness Training • Regular text message Security Info Service • Armed driver • Guarded at hotel • Hotel Lock Down • Maintain comms throughout
Sudan • Requirement v Reality: • Students old enemies, hostility • Not just ELT but encourage cooperation between groups • Course Prep in evenings • Leadership training • No training/sanitation facilities • 45°C daily temperatures • Surrounded by mine fields • North/South educational divide

Angola • DA requested similar course as Congo to be delivered in 3 wks • Short notice=no TNA • Took sponsors word for SLP level • Security: • Check security status • Armed driver • Maintain comms throughout
Angola • Requirement v Reality: • Market well supported with TEFL, need to be different • Initial student difficulty in adapting to different methodology • Poor IT • Students poorly educated • Deprogramming
