DANIEL 3:1-7 1. The King’s Pride
DANIEL 3:1 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits, and its breadth six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.
DANIEL 3:6 And whoever does not fall down and worship, at that moment they will be thrown into the middle of a burning fiery furnace.
DANIEL 3 Nebuchadnezzar set up … (vv2, 3, 7 etc)
DANIEL 3:28 “were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.”
Isaiah 40:19 “As for an idol, a craftsman casts it and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it.”
EXODUS 20:2-6 You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make to yourselves any graven image, … You shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them.
DANIEL 3:8 Then at that time certain Chaldeans came near and accused the Jews.
DANIEL 3:10-11 You, O king, have made a decree that every man who shall hear the sound of the … music, shall fall down and worship the golden image.
DANIEL 3:10-11 … And whoever does not fall down and worship, he should be thrown into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.
DANIEL 3:12 These men, O king, do not heed you. They do not serve your gods nor worship the golden image which you have set up.
ESTHER 3:8 “There is a certain people … whose customs are different from those of all other people and who do not obey the king’s laws; it is not in the king’s best interest to tolerate them.”
DANIEL 2:12 For this cause the king was enraged and angered, and commanded all the wise men of Babylon to be destroyed.
DANIEL 2:49 And Daniel asked the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of the province of Babylon.
DANIEL 3:15 … But if you do not worship, in that moment you shall be thrown into the middle of a burning fiery furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hands?
DANIEL 3:9 They [Chaldeans] spoke and said to King Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live forever. DANIEL 3:16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar …
DANIEL 3:17 If it is so, that our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, then He will deliver us out of your hand, O king.
DANIEL 3:18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods nor worship the golden image which you have set up.
DANIEL 3:26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near the door of the burning fiery furnace. He answered and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come forth and come here. …
“Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, came forth from the middle of the fire.”
DANIEL 3:27 And the satraps, the prefects, the governors, and the king's advisers gathered and saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power …
DANIEL 3:27 … (and the hair of their head was not scorched, nor were their slippers changed, nor had the smell of fire clung on them).
By delivering us introuble rather than saving us from trouble, God is most honored and His people most blessed.
“When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze” (Isa. 43:2 cf. Ps.66:12)
PSALM 66:10, 12 “For you, O God, tested us; You refined us like silver…We went through fire and water, but you brought us to a place of abundance.”
PSALM 34:7 “the Angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and he delivers them.”
DANIEL 3:29 And a decree is given by me, that every people, nation, and language, who speak anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, …
DANIEL 3:29 … shall be made into mere members, and his house shall be made an outhouse. Because there is no other God who can deliver in this way.
DANIEL 2:5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, … if you will not make known to me the dream, with its meaning, you will be made into mere members, and your houses shall be made an outhouse.
It is wrong “ever to consider religious violence as an expression of a profound conviction.”
DANIEL 3:15 … Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hands? DANIEL 3:29 Because there is no other God who can deliver in this way.
“See now that I myself am He!There is no other god besides me.I put to death and I bring to life.I have wounded and I will heal,And no one can deliver out of my hand.”Deuteronomy 32:39
HEBREWS 11:34 [They] quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the strangers.
Summary of the Teaching • GOD IS PATIENT • God taught him the most important lesson, one that every ruler should learn: that the Lord is sovereign over the world, over the rise and fall of kings and empires.
Summary of the Teaching 2. WORSHIP AND IDOLATRY History begins (Gen.4:1-8) and ends (Rev. 13:4, 14,15) with a religious conflict between human beings centered on the issue of worship. The first two commandments speak directly on this topic.
Summary of the Teaching 3. ESCHATOLOGY The story in Daniel 3 has an eschatological dimension and an end-time application. Revelation 13 builds on it, saying that an event similar to the one that took place on the plain of Dura will happen at the end of this world’s history.
Summary of the Teaching 4. MIRACLES Miracles do not produce nor create faith. Faith comes as a gift of God’s Spirit. Miracles can only confirm or strengthen faith that already exists.
Summary of the Teaching 5. WHERE WAS DANIEL? We simply do not know the answer. It is worth remembering that according to the story recorded in chapter 6, Daniel was not spared a similar test of his loyalty to his God.
