Assimilation -White settlers steadily moved westward, creating tension w/ the Native Americans. -The federal government pursued a policy of assimilation, which required Native Americans to do what? Rely on farming rather than hunting, requiring less land. But native Americans did not change to this type of lifestyle. -By the War of 1812, why did the U.S. Govt. give up on the policy of Assimilation? Because they were afraid that the Indians would side with the British or the Spanish. -Shawnee chief Tecumseh tried to resist the white settlers and stand up against the U.S. Govt. Why did he fail? Because one of the Choctaw chiefs persuaded his people not to join Tecumseh and Tecumseh was killed, this ended United Native American resistance. -The Choctaw/Chickasaw were eventually required to leave Mississippi for land in the West.
Federal Treaties with Native American Tribes -The Treaty of Fort Adams was the first in a series of treaties in which the Choctaw had to give up their land. -What did the U.S. receive the right to build as a result of this treaty? The Natchez Trace -The Treaty of Mount Dexter gave the U.S.? Over 4 million acres of land in south MS in exchange for cancelling the debts of Native Americans. -What did the Treaty of Doak’s Stand do? Gave U.S. five million acres, including the Jackson, MS area. What were the Choctaw promised? Land west of the MS. They rejected the land because it was already settled by whites. The Choctaw refused to leave the state of MS. -The Choctaw had no choice by 1830 and signed? The Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. This gave away the rest of their land in MS and the Choctaw agreed to move west to what is now Oklahoma.
