  2. What is Effective Communication? • MaSeR • Message • Sender • Receiver • Getting your point across without “fluff”

  3. Why is Effective Communication Important? • Communication is key to successful relationships • Being concise with your message prevents confusion • Shares your views AND news with others!

  4. Just in case you forgot….

  5. Tier to Tier • Develop relationships with your fellow VOA’s on your tier • Exchange best practices • Exchange information • Help them promote their projects • Stay supportive and humble

  6. Lower Tier to Higher Tier • For example, Council to Area • Let them know of your progress • Don’t be afraid to ask for help (or offer help!) • Attend meetings when applicable • Promote and participate in their projects

  7. Higher Tier to Lower Tier • For example, Area to Council • Check up on status of the VOA • Communicate monthly (at a minimum) • Encourage Council VOA participation in events and other projects • Promote and participate in their events

  8. Who Does the Communicating? • The Vice President of Communication! • Communicates at least once a month • Reports back to the VOA of their tier • The President and Advisor should be Cced in emails- they are the #1 contact

  9. Sensitivities • Be careful of your word choices • Each VOA has its unique struggles and strengths • Be mindful of attitude • Check yoself ‘fore you wreck yoself • (Or have someone else check your message before you send it out) • Remember- a Scout is Courteous!

  10. Methods of Communication • Emails • Phone calls • Verbal • Facebook/other social media sites • Newsletters • Snail Mail • Smoke Signals • Bat Signal?

  11. Discussion What have you found to be most effective when communicating with other VOA’s? What challenges have you met? Is there a right or wrong way to communicate?
