Lucas Samaras • Born in Greece in 1936 and moved to New Jersey • Graduated with a degree in Art • His work is solely about himself • What do y’all think of an artist who only does work about himself/herself? • Works with photography, acrylic, and Identity Boxes
Joseph Cornell • Born in 1903 in New York • Father was a designer • Self-taught artist • Loner, isolated himself from others • Used found objects in artworks • Found most of his objects at thrift stores • Pioneer of assemblage in 1940s-60s • Assemblage-a sculptural form of art using found objects that is compiled like a collage

Indentity Box Project • We will be using shoe boxes, along with magazines, colored paper, and/or found objects (needs to be school appropriate) • Make assemblage including found objects or create objects • Create a rough plan on what you will be doing with your Identity Box • Be able to explain each item and why it represents yourself • Cover ENTIRE box!!!!
