  2. IN 1995, AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD CANADA (AAFC) strategically re-located the hub of the oat breeding program to the Lacombe Research Centre.

  3. AAFC concurrently approached several primary processors, milling clients and seed marketers to investigate possible partnering in an oat breeding program to be based in Winnipeg

  4. Private sector contributions could be matched with funds available through the Matching Investment Initiative recently implemented by AAFC

  5. The original consortium: Can-Oat Milling Cargill Emerson Milling General Mills Malt-O-Meal Quaker Oats SeCan Value-Added Seed Pioneer Hi-Bred Australia

  6. The current consortium: Can-Oat Milling Cargill Emerson Milling General Mills Grain Millers, Inc. Pepsi-Quaker Oats SeCan FarmPure Seed Austgrains

  7. Proven Track Record Since the inception of the POBC, AAFC-CRC has registered seven oat cultivars with disease resistance and milling quality

  8. Economic research (Nagy 2003) has shown the rate of return for investment into cereal breeding research ranges from 25-39%
