Introduction • We have built the Temple of Kukulcan located in Chichen Itza, in the Yucatan Peninsula, in Mexico. • It’s also known as “the Castle” or “El Castillo”. • The early inhabitants were the Itza (a maya group). • Founded in the year 514 of our era
How It’s made • It’s been said it was made by Maya and Toltec influences. • It’s a stepped pyramid with a staircase on each side. • Kukulcan stands about 90 feet tall, with a total of 365 steps the number of days in a year and 18 terrace segments the number of months in the Mayan calendar.
How It’s made cont. • The diagonal axis of the structure points toward the sunrise of the summer solstice. • The terraces fall on the staircases so that a zigzag pattern appears ending with the serpent head at the bottom of the staircase - representing the body of the plumed serpent Kukulcan descending from his temple atop the pyramid to bless the earth.
Where’d the name come from ? • The name Kukulcan came from a Mayan supreme god to whom the Maya attributed many functions.
Where’d the name come from cont. • He was the god of the four elements, the creator god, and the god of reincarnation and ressurection. These are the four Elements.
Where’d the name come from cont. • Kukulcan originated from Toltec myth were he was a divine hero who taught the Toltecs laws, fishing, healing, the calendar and agri-culture.
Activities in Cancun • If you were to visit Kukulcan you would be in the area of Cancun were you could swim with dolphins, parasail, go on a jungle tour, have an exotic dinner and way more !
COMPARE AND CONTRAST • Compared to other pyramids Kukulcan is more unique because of it’s serpent design. • Also the fact that it’s make up is totally based on the Mayan calendar.
Compare and contrast cont. • Kukulkan is the largest pyramid of all the pyramids in Chichen Itza.
Kukulcan building facts • It took over 20 years to build Kukulcan. • Kukulcan was a pyramid built with a larger pyramid put on top of an older one.(When the mexican government got inside of it they found a smaller pyramid buried underneath it and it’s now open to tourist.) • Inside of the temple chamber is a Chac Mool statue and a throne in the shape of a jaguar, painted red with spots made of inlaid jade. • Made by mesoamerican cultures.
History of CHICHEN ITZA • Chichen Itza is about 25 miles southeast of Merida. • Chichen Itza is known as the most famous Mayan archaeological site in the state Yucatan. • It contains two different principal areas:Chichen Viejo and Chichen Nuevo.
History of the Maya • The Mayan origanated about 3,000 years ago in present-day Guatemala, Honduras,Belize, and Mexico. • The empire in the south died out most likely due to disease, drought , political upheaval, and overpopulation, but the people n the north flourished. • The Maya were very skilled including making a sophisticated language, developing a social class system, and using mathematics.
