  3.  Your task • Read the information that follows from ‘The Struggle for Peace in Northern Ireland’ and answer questions 1- 5.

  4. Reasons for growth in support for Sinn Fein • Execution of leaders of Easter Rising • Proposal to introduce conscription for Irish • Sinn Fein declared itself to be Dail Earrean • Enjoyed support of IRA

  5. Resistance to the Dail • Leader of Sinn Fein (De Valera) unpopular with Unionists: Catholic, supporter of Gaelic League • Worries in Westminster & Ulster over hardline views of Sinn Fein (compared with moderate IPP)

  6. Tactics used by British & Irish • IRA pursued guerrilla war against RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) • New British regiment - Black & Tans • IRA organised itself into flying columns
