Components of an Application • Teaching & learning context • Teaching philosophy (What drives your teaching?) • Criterion/ia (What are your strengths?) • Evidence of impact on student learning • Citation (What key words describe your outstanding contribution to student learning?)
Criteria for Citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning • Five broad criteria • Approaches to the support of learning and teaching that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn • Development of curricula, resources and services that reflect a command of the field • Approaches to assessment, feedback and learning support that foster independent learning • Respect and support for the development of students as individuals • Scholarly activities and service innovations that have influenced and enhanced learning and teaching • (*Changed for 2008 to be more inclusive of the work of support and general staff)
Citations for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning • To recognise and reward diverse contributions by individuals and teams • Significant contribution to student learning • Sustained period • Widely recognised- students, colleagues, UWS, broader community • Strong institutional endorsement • For staff in many roles: academic, general, sessional, associates Nominations MUST: • relate to student learning in higher education • address one or more criteria • provide evidence of how contribution has influenced student learning, student engagement or overall student experience • Institutions MUST: • Assess the nominations • Submit to ALTC up to 10 ranked nominations with Citation wording (25 words)
Looking at Successful Applications • What is the context in which this person teaches? (key words only) • What key words capture their teaching philosophy? • What types of evidence were used to support their outstanding contribution to student learning? • What key words in the citation statement capture the essence of their application?
Writing and Refining your Application • What are the strengths of your application? • What are the weaknesses, gaps or missing elements? • How will you strengthen your application? • When will you find time to write/ revise your application? • Who can help you? Has anyone read your draft? • Will you be ready by 16th March? • Where to now? • Feedback from colleagues • Finding a Professional Friend • TDU, ALTC Coordinator
Do not attempt to address all criteria. Select one or two areas of strength. No advantage to select more • The examples under the criteria are indicative • The written statement should contain • Proposed citation (max 25 words) • Summary of particular contribution & specific context • Statement addressing chosen selection criterion/ia • Statement of evidence for ways your contribution has: • influenced student learning/ engagement/ overall experience • been sustained over time • been recognised by colleagues, UWS &/or broader community • Provide examples, evidence & impact • Provide evidence from a variety of sources • Demonstrate breadth and depth • Write in your own voice • Less is more – if it cannot be said in 4 A4 pages for Statement (minimum 11 point, Arial Narrow recommended, 2cm margins) then EDIT • Choose 2 referees carefully • You cannot start writing too soon.
