Childhood/Young Adulthood • Born Samuel Bellamy in 1689, in Devonshire England • Later he was married and had a child • In his late teens, he joined the British Navy • During his journeys he had an affair with Maria Hallett • Since her parents didn’t approve of him, he left to become a pirate so that he could support her

Ship • Mary Ann • Bellamy was elected as the captain of this ship before he captured the Sultana • Sultana • Became the flagship of Captain Bellamy after it was captured • Whydah • A captured English slave ship that Bellamy Captured • Bellamy generously gave the Sultana to the captain of the Whydah after he stole the ship.

  6. Pirate Code of Conduct • Said to be almost a Democracy • Because of this, he was well liked by his crew which earned him the name “Pirate Robin Hood”

  7. Fellow Pirates? • Before he became captain, Bellamy worked on the Mary Anne under Captain Benjamin Hornigold. • Hornigold’s first mate was Edward Teach, better known as “Blackbeard”

  8. Cause of Trouble • After capturing the Whydah, his ship was caught in a storm and eventually sank. • All but 8 people on the ship died, including Bellamy.

  9. Interesting Stories • Capture of the Whydah • In 1717, Bellamy got into a 3 day chase to capture the Whydah • This ship contained indigo, sugar, gold bars and a large amount of Spanish coins • After it was captured, Bellamy kindly gave his old ship, the Sultana, to the captain of the Whydah
